New Orleans Pelicans center Yves Missi is carrying a strong run with Cameroon, and the numbers have been hard to ignore.
Missi started at center for the Cameroon National Team in the FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers, where he has helped push the team through a productive stretch. Cameroon advanced to the second round in July, that phase began at the end of August, and through three games in the second round Missi helped them go 2-1. Overall, Cameroon is 7-2 in the tournament and tied for first in its group.
On Thursday, the Pelicans highlighted Missi’s work with the national team on social media, pointing to the production he put up across those three games: 18.0 points, 11 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game.
The competition level isn’t the NBA, but the performance still stands out because of how different Missi looks. He has played with more confidence, and he even knocked down a three. He also appears bigger and stronger, while moving with more certainty and reading the game faster than he has at times in New Orleans.
That growth matters because Missi already took a meaningful step forward as a rim protector last season. He posted a 3.8% block rate, good for the 95th percentile among NBA bigs, and added an 88th-percentile offensive rebounding rate of 13.6%.
Now he heads toward training camp with a real shot to open the season as the starter at center. The competition is with Derik Queen, and Missi brings the defensive upside. There is also a path where Queen moves to the four and Missi becomes the long-term five, especially with a new coaching staff expected to weigh how the two fit together.
The front office already knows what it has in Missi, too. According to the source report, the Pelicans have had to turn down offers for him from other teams.
Training camp is still a month away, but Missi has already given New Orleans an early reminder of what he can bring.
