Young Grizzlies Put Early Momentum To The Test Against Pelicans

With revamped rosters and significant offseason moves, the Grizzlies look to maintain their winning streak against the retooled Pelicans in their first meeting of the season.

The Memphis Grizzlies will try to keep their perfect start rolling Monday night when they host the New Orleans Pelicans at FedExForum. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.

CST in Memphis, with the game airing on DAZN in Memphis and Gulf Coast Sports & Entertainment Network in New Orleans. Radio coverage will be available on 92.9 FM and 680 AM in Memphis, plus 870 AM and 105.3 FM in New Orleans.

Memphis enters at 6-0, while New Orleans comes in at 2-4. It’s the first of four meetings between the teams in the 2026-2027 season. Last year, they split the season series 2-2.

The Grizzlies are also carrying a very different look into this season. With Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane now playing for different teams, Memphis has turned the page to a younger core built around No. 3 pick Cameron Boozer, 2024 No. 9 pick Zach Edey, 2025 No. 11 pick Cedric Coward and 2024 No. 39 pick Jaylen Wells, with veteran guard Ty Jerome directing the offense.

New Orleans has made plenty of changes too. The Pelicans hired Jamahl Mosley as their new head coach, selected Jaron Pierre with the 58th pick, added Bennedict Mathurin and Trendon Watford in free agency, traded for AJ Johnson, re-signed DeAndre Jordan and gave Saddiq Bey a three-year contract extension.

Memphis is coming off a 136-105 win over the Sacramento Kings, a game that gave Jerami Grant a clear read on what’s driving the group right now. After the victory, he said, "Playing hard, we're doing what we're supposed to do. We got to stay consistent so we can keep it going."

He added, "We just got to stay consistent, keep it in the right mind frame."

The Grizzlies are listed as 5.5-point favorites, with Memphis at -118 and New Orleans at +5.5 at -104. Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem and wants help, call 1-800-GAMBLER.

Pelicans Sent A Message In That Scuffle And The NBA Noticed

The fallout from the scuffle in New Orleans carried beyond the final whistle, with the NBA stepping in after tempers flared between the Pelicans and Hawks. What started with contact between Atlanta guard Kingston Flemings and New Orleans guard Bryce McGowens quickly spilled into a broader confrontation, drawing players from both sides into the moment and putting the league office on notice.

For the Pelicans, the sequence also offered a glimpse of the edge Jamahl Mosley has been trying to build into this group. Mosley praised the teams camaraderie afterward, and even in a brief, messy exchange, New Orleans showed it would not be pushed around without a response. The leagues discipline only underscored how fast a routine game can turn into something more consequential. [Read more 🡒]

Pelicans May Have Found Jamahl Mosleys Defensive Identity Problem

Jamahl Mosley has spent enough time around elite defenses to know what a real identity looks like, and in New Orleans, he is still searching for one that shows up night after night. The Pelicans have only had a limited number of games where they held opponents under 100 points, a mark Mosley reached often with the Orlando Magic, even as the group has shown flashes of the disruptive, connected defense he wants.

A recent win over the Atlanta Hawks offered a cleaner glimpse of that direction, with the Pelicans turning defensive activity into offense and finding some help from a rotation that has been forced to change because of injuries. The challenge now is making those stretches last, especially with turnovers and perimeter shooting still complicating the bigger picture, and Mosley has more defensive options to sort through as the lineup continues to shift. Grizzlies Unbeaten Start Faces A New Concern Before Pelicans Game

The Pelicans head into their matchup with Memphis already navigating a familiar early-season injury report, with Trey Murphy III listed as probable despite dealing with bilateral patella tendinopathy. New Orleans is also expected to be without Yves Missi and Jordan Poole, leaving the rotation a little thinner as it prepares to see how it stacks up against a Grizzlies team that has started unbeaten.

Memphis has a few concerns of its own, with Scotty Pippen Jr. doubtful and Quinten Post questionable because of injuries. For the Pelicans, the bigger immediate question is how much Murphy can give them and how the rest of the available group fills in around him, especially with both teams carrying enough uncertainty to make this one feel less predictable than a typical early-season meeting.
