The New Orleans Pelicans are navigating a rough patch, trying to shake off a five-game losing streak that’s dampened the excitement from their earlier successes. Just two weeks ago, they were riding high on a five-game home winning streak and a solid 10-5 run post-All-Star break. But now, as they head into a challenging west coast trip against the Portland Trail Blazers and Sacramento Kings, they’re eager to rediscover their winning ways.
Sunday’s 134-102 loss to the Houston Rockets was a tough pill to swallow, matching their worst defeat of the season-a 32-point setback against the Boston Celtics. With only six games left and the playoffs out of reach for the second consecutive year, the Pelicans are facing a historic low, marking the first time the franchise has lost 50 or more games in back-to-back seasons.
Interim coach James Borrego remains optimistic, urging his team to finish strong. “We’ve always responded,” he said.
“The key now is to keep competing and finish the season on a high note. Over the last 70 games, this group has shown competitive spirit.”
Forward Trey Murphy, sidelined with an ankle injury, might return soon, offering a potential boost. Borrego emphasized the importance of these final games for building habits and maintaining momentum.
“Six games is still a lot of basketball,” he noted. “You want to enter the offseason with a positive mindset.”
The recent losses included tough matchups against top Eastern Conference teams like the Cavaliers, Knicks, Pistons, and Raptors, with the road proving particularly challenging. Borrego acknowledged the difficulties but stressed the need to remain competitive.
“It’s about finishing strong,” he said. “Do your job and bring it every day.”
Sunday’s game against the Rockets highlighted some struggles, particularly with the second unit, who were outscored 39-18 in the second quarter. Borrego candidly admitted, “I subbed,” but was encouraged by the team’s spirited practice on Tuesday.
As they prepare for Portland, Borrego is confident in his team’s resilience. “There is no doubt this group will respond with great effort,” he stated.
“They care about each other and don’t want the season to end. We need to ensure this doesn’t happen next season.”
The Pelicans are focused on closing out the season with pride and determination, setting the stage for a stronger comeback next year.
