The Pelicans have added another name to their training camp mix, and Christian Koloko fits the same theme that keeps hanging over this roster: upside, but not much certainty.
According to HoopsHype’s Mike Scotto, New Orleans has signed Koloko to its second training camp deal. He’s now in the mix for one of the team’s final two-way spots, where he’ll be competing with Kobe Bufkin. Koloko, a former Raptor, Laker, Grizzly, and Hawk, has already taken a winding path since Toronto drafted him No. 33 in the 2022 NBA Draft, with off-the-court health issues playing a major role in that journey.
There’s still a reason teams keep taking a look. Koloko arrived in the league as an athletic finisher, a live-wire rim protector, and a big who can change the game around the basket.
That profile looks a lot like current Pelicans center Yves Missi, which is part of why Koloko feels like a familiar kind of swing for New Orleans. At 26, there’s still a case that some of his best basketball is ahead of him, if his health lets him stay on the floor.
But that’s also the problem. He’s another upside bet on a roster already crowded with upside bets in the frontcourt. For a team that will be trying to figure things out next season, that lack of proven experience in the middle is hard to ignore.
The Koloko move only sharpens the bigger issue: the Pelicans’ center rotation remains thin on certainty. Joe Dumars has clearly been building with Zion Williamson in mind, and the logic is easy to see. When Zion is rolling, he’s a downhill force, a bully in the post, an elite finisher at the rim, and a dangerous drive-and-kick threat.
Still, Zion would benefit from a real bruiser next to him - someone who can clean the glass, protect the rim, and take some of the burden off him inside. At 6-foot-6, Zion has shown repeatedly that he’s not built to be a dominant rebounder, especially with everything else he’s asked to do offensively.
New Orleans entered the offseason needing more shooting to open the floor, but the need for a center ended up being even more pressing. If the Pelicans want to get Zion to an MVP level, the five spot matters just as much as the perimeter.
There is a path where a committee works. Teams like the Celtics have shown that a rotation built around multiple bigs can function if the pieces are ready. The Pelicans can point to Karlo Matkovic, Derik Queen, Missi, and now potentially Koloko as a group with different tools and some theoretical starting-caliber traits.
The issue is that theory isn’t the same as proof. None of those bigs are proven enough to make this feel like a stable answer, and that leaves New Orleans with the same concern it started with.
Koloko might turn into a useful camp story and maybe even a bench big worth keeping around. But he doesn’t solve the larger problem, and he certainly doesn’t give Zion the experienced center help this roster needed.
