The Indiana Pacers will open their season Wednesday night on the road against the New Orleans Pelicans, but they won’t have two important pieces of the rotation available.
According to the Pacers’ social media account on X, starting small forward Aaron Nesmith has been ruled out with a left hamstring strain. Nesmith also sat out the final two preseason games because of the injury, though the full extent of the issue wasn’t clear at the time. Now that he’s missing the first game of the regular season, the concern around it naturally rises.
Indiana already had a chance to test a replacement look in the preseason, and Kelly Oubre Jr. handled that role smoothly. The newly acquired small forward started in Nesmith’s place and looked comfortable with the group.
In the preseason, Oubre averaged 8.5 points in 16.5 minutes per game while shooting 52.2% from the field (12-23) and 46.2% from three (6-13). He’s still learning the Pacers’ system and terminology, but getting three preseason games with the starters gave him a useful head start.
Nesmith’s absence pushes Jarace Walker and Ben Sheppard into larger bench roles at the backup two and three spots. Walker also missed the final two preseason games with an undisclosed injury, though he was not listed on the injury report.
The other absence is T.J. McConnell, who remains sidelined with a right hamstring strain. He missed all of the preseason with the injury, and the Pacers will be keeping a close eye on that situation as well.
Without McConnell, Indiana has a couple of options. The team can trim the rotation and use Andrew Nembhard as the backup point guard, or it can go deeper and give Quenton Jackson minutes with the second unit. There’s also a chance Braden Smith dresses in case the Pacers need another point guard option.
Depth is supposed to be one of the biggest strengths of this roster, but losing two key rotational players to start the season is not the kind of news Indiana wanted heading into its opener.

Yves Missi Faces Early Pelicans Test That Could Shake Up Rotation
Yves Missi is set to open the season as the Pelicans starting center, and the early schedule is not exactly handing him a soft landing. New Orleans is asking the young big man to handle tough matchups against some of the leagues best centers right away, which makes his defensive footing an immediate storyline for a team trying to settle its frontcourt rotation.
The Pelicans are also putting a clear evaluation process around the spot, with head coach Jamahl Mosley looking closely at how Missi holds up out of the gate. If the defensive end becomes a problem, New Orleans has other options it can turn to, which gives the first stretch of the season a little extra weight for a position that could quickly become fluid. Pelicans Already Have A Derik Queen Question They Cant Ignore
Derik Queen gave the Pelicans something to think about in preseason, and not just because of the board work. Over four games, the rookie showed he can rebound at a high level, finishing with 8.8 per game, while also flashing enough playmaking to keep the ball moving. But the offensive output was uneven, with just 5.8 points a night on 33.3% shooting, the kind of start that leaves coaches weighing his strengths against the parts of his game that still need polish.
The passing numbers only added to the conversation, with Queen posting nine assists and nine turnovers as he tried to find his rhythm in Jamahl Mosleys system. At the same time, Jeremiah Fears continued to build momentum by leading New Orleans in preseason scoring and looking more comfortable in command of the offense, a contrast that sharpens the question around how Queen fits as the season approaches. Pelicans Opener Could Reveal A Lot About Jamahl Mosley Fast
The first regular-season game of the Jamahl Mosley era arrives with a little more intrigue than most openers. New Orleans will host Indiana to start the 2026-27 season, and for once the Pelicans are walking into October without the usual injury fog hanging over them. Mosley gets a clean read on a roster that looks fully available, while the matchup also brings an opponent with its own headline return.
Indianas visit will also put a familiar face back on the floor in a way the Pelicans will have to account for quickly. The Pacers are set to get their star guard back after a long absence, which gives this opener a little extra weight beyond the coaching debut and the healthy roster in New Orleans. For Mosley, its the kind of game that can say a lot about where the Pelicans are right away, even if the full answer is still a few weeks away. [Read more 🡒]
