Kawhi Leonard Stuns Fans With Unexpected Return Against Pelicans Tonight

Kawhi Leonards absence against the Pelicans raises concerns for the Clippers as they navigate injuries on a challenging road trip.

The LA Clippers are deep into a grueling road trip, facing off against the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday night. It's the second night of a back-to-back and the finale of a demanding five-games-in-seven-days stretch.

Kawhi Leonard, the seven-time NBA All-Star, made a return from a brief absence on Wednesday, playing against the Pelicans after missing Monday's clash with the Spurs due to a left ankle sprain. Leonard's injury occurred late in Saturday’s game against the Kings, forcing him out in the fourth quarter. Although he bounced back quickly to suit up on Wednesday, the big question was whether he'd hit the court again on Thursday.

Initially listed as "Questionable," Leonard was eventually ruled out for Thursday's game. The Clippers have always been cautious with their star, especially given his past injuries. Yet, Leonard has been eager to contribute as the team battles for playoff spots.

Another player to watch is guard Darius Garland, who’s also out, dealing with left toe injury management. Garland hasn't participated in back-to-backs since his return, and it seems unlikely that will change soon.

Leonard has faced criticism for his injury history, but this season he’s been a workhorse, participating in both halves of nine back-to-back sets. His past injuries, including a torn ACL and meniscus, have kept him sidelined during crucial postseason runs.

However, this season, Leonard has been mostly healthy, appearing in 54 of the Clippers' 69 games. His early-season right ankle sprain accounted for 10 of his 15 missed games.

Despite recent setbacks, Leonard has been on a scoring tear, surpassing Bob McAdoo with his 45th consecutive 20+ point game, setting a new franchise record. On Wednesday, he notched 25 points and eight rebounds, pushing his streak to 46 games, second only to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Thunder.

Clippers coach Tyronn Lue praised Leonard's achievements, highlighting his dedication and performance, especially in his 14th season. Lue emphasized Leonard's relentless work ethic and the potential for continued success if he remains healthy.

This season, Leonard's presence has been vital, with the Clippers going 30-24 in games he's played. Without him, they’ve struggled to a 4-11 record and are winless in games he exited due to injury.

Leonard is averaging career-high numbers: 28.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.0 steals, shooting 50.4% from the field, 38.3% from beyond the arc, and 89.8% from the line.

The Clippers have turned their season around, now sitting at 34-35 after a rocky 6-21 start. However, they're on a three-game skid and facing a potential fourth loss against the Pelicans without Leonard and Garland.

Both teams have five players listed on the injury report for the game. The Pelicans recently bested the Clippers 124-109, and Thursday's matchup marks their final showdown of the season.
