The Devils opened training camp with a small surprise and a clear message about where Jesper Bratt stands inside the room.
Head coach Sheldon Keefe addressed a second alternate captain vacancy at the club’s first meeting of camp, and by the end of the afternoon that opening had been filled. Bratt now has the A permanently stitched onto his jersey, a decision Keefe and general manager Sunny Mehta made together.
“The obvious answer was Bratt.”
Keefe explained the thinking behind the move by pointing to the standard the organization wants its leaders to set. “We talk about being the example, we talk about dong the things that are required, we talk about making the choice, making the decision to do the hard things,” Keefe said.
“ When Sunny and I sat down and we talked our way through this, we talked about different people it could be and we have a number of people that I know are absolutely focused on doing what it takes to bring this team to the next level. But one name that really stood out as one, A) does the right things on and off the ice but is also ultra determined to help bring himself and this team to the next level."
Keefe then called Bratt to the podium to receive the jersey.
Bratt now joins Jack Hughes as an alternate captain, alongside captain Nico Hischier.
The 28-year-old is entering his 10th NHL season after debuting in 2017-18. Across 634 NHL games, Bratt has put up 518 points, including 172 goals and 346 assists.
He has topped 70 points in five straight seasons, making him the second player in franchise history to do that in five consecutive years. His biggest season came in 2024-25, when he finished with 88 points and his 67 assists set a new franchise record for assists in a single season.

The Devils have moved into a new phase upstairs, with Sunny Mehta now running hockey operations after the organization parted ways with Tom Fitzgerald.
