Quinn Hughes’ contract situation with the Minnesota Wild is suddenly looking like a decision point, and the next month could tell the whole story.
On Tuesday morning, Michael Russo of The Athletic reported that Hughes and his camp are set to meet with Wild general manager Bill Guerin this week to talk about a contract extension. Russo also said Minnesota wants to lock Hughes in long term, with a preferred term in the 5-8 year range.

That update lands at a tense moment, because the timeline around Hughes’ extension has already started to feel strange. For weeks, the expectation around the league was that a deal would be straightforward. Since the Wild acquired the 26-year-old defenseman, the sense from major reporters and insiders was that a multi-year extension was all but inevitable.
Elliotte Friedman said more than once that he expected something to get done by the end of July. Russo had also described the situation as close to finished on multiple occasions. Guerin himself went as far as calling a new contract for Hughes his top priority.
But the latest reporting suggests the talks have not moved nearly as quickly as people around the situation once believed. There have been reports of only limited communication between the sides, with “busyness” from Guerin and Pat Brisson, Hughes’ agent, cited as part of the holdup. Minnesota’s pursuit of Dylan Larkin has also been mentioned as part of the team’s pitch to keep Hughes in the fold.
Meanwhile, Hughes and his brothers have been spending the offseason around New York City and New Jersey, and the family has been open about the idea of playing together on the same team.
From the Wild’s side, this is where the pressure starts to build. Hughes himself has said he is comfortable entering a season without an extension, but that comfort does not extend to the front office. Minnesota paid a steep price to land him, sending three top prospects and a first-round pick the other way, and going into the season without a deal beyond this year would leave Guerin in a dangerous spot.
The longer this drags on, the more the possibility of Hughes ending up in New Jersey starts to loom. That becomes even more pointed when you look at the offseason moves on both sides: the Devils have improved their roster, while Minnesota has only gotten worse.
