Two seasons after drafting Anton Silayev, the New Jersey Devils are gearing up to bring this promising prospect into their ranks for the 2026-27 season. With the KHL season wrapping up and the Gagarin Cup playoffs on the horizon, all eyes are on Silayev, the 2024 No. 10 pick, as his contract with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod nears its end.
At just 19, Silayev has faced challenges this season. After a coaching change, his ice time dwindled, and his offensive stats took a hit, dropping from 12 points last season to just three this year. The Devils are keen to provide him with a more supportive environment to help him rediscover his form.
NHL insider David Pagnotta shared insights on The Sheet podcast with Jeff Marek, emphasizing the Devils' plans to sign Silayev to an entry-level contract. "His contract expires at the end of the season in the KHL," Pagnotta explained. "The plan is for him to sign with the Devils and make the move to North America."
However, the transition isn't without its hurdles. The visa process is complex, and the timeline will depend on how far Torpedo advances in the playoffs. The aim is to have Silayev in New Jersey for development camp at the end of June, aligning with the NHL draft.
Silayev's current team, Torpedo, is set to face Severstal Cherepovets in the first round of the Gagarin Cup playoffs, with Game 1 kicking off on Monday night. While it's unlikely Silayev will join the Devils or their AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets, this season, the focus remains on getting him ready for the future.
The Devils are hopeful that by bringing Silayev over, they can help him tap into his potential and become a key player in their lineup.
