The New Jersey Devils’ preseason ended up carrying a real scare Thursday night, and it involved one of their top young defensemen.
Seamus Casey left the game against the New York Rangers after suffering an injury, and the early read was not encouraging. The Devils fell 4-3 in a shootout, but the result barely registered compared with Casey’s exit and what it could mean for both New Jersey and Utica.
Casey’s injury came on a play where he tried to step into a hit but moved awkwardly instead. He limped off immediately, tried to remain on the bench for a few minutes, and then headed down the tunnel. At that point, the concern only grew.
While there was contact on the play, the source of the injury did not appear to be the hit itself. That leaves the big question hanging over whether this is a knee issue or an ankle issue, and that distinction could tell the whole story for how long Casey is out.
That’s a rough development for a player who had already battled injuries last year and had not appeared in a regular-season game since the end of January. Amanda Stein summed up the frustration in a post on X: "Really tough for Seamus who dealt with injuries last year and hasn’t played a regular season game since the end of January.
Worked hard to get back and now this. Hopefully won’t be too long. But that’s a tough blow for the kid."
The timing could hardly be worse. The Devils have not made any roster cuts yet, so the full camp group is still intact, but with opening night only a week away as of Thursday, that’s about to change fast. There is one preseason game left, and the next step is expected to be trimming the roster and getting players lined up for Utica.
Casey was expected to have a major role with the Comets to start the season, and this injury could put him on the shelf right away. He was not projected to crack the opening lineup, even with Johnny Kovacevic injured, but he was viewed as a likely first call-up option.
That matters because Casey carried real value for the organization. His absence would hit the Comets immediately and would also leave the Devils thinner on the blue line.
It could even affect the way New Jersey handles future moves. Casey had been part of the discussion around possible trades, including a Quinn Hughes or Connor Hellebuyck trade, and now the Devils may need to look at another top prospect instead.
For now, the team is waiting for clarity. And until they get it, the worst-case possibility will hang over both New Jersey and Utica.
