Despite recent struggles, the Devils look to simplify their strategy and bolster their lineup, focusing on stronger defensive play and utilizing Connor Brown's experience to regain momentum.

Devils Practice Insights: Ready to Bounce Back

The New Jersey Devils hit the ice at RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House inside the Prudential Center on Friday, gearing up for their next challenge. Here's a breakdown of the key takeaways from their practice session.

Owning the Ice

Jesper Bratt, reunited with Jack Hughes, reflected on their recent game against Calgary where their line was on the ice for four goals against in a tight 5-4 loss. Bratt candidly admitted that their focus on offense led to defensive lapses.

"We created some good looks and offense off the rush," Bratt explained. "But we got caught up in it and missed our defensive duties.

We take full responsibility and pride in our defense too. We're eager to show what we can do after today's practice."

Despite the setback, the trio of Bratt, Hughes, and Connor Brown has shown promise. Brown, the new addition, has seamlessly integrated into the line.

"He's a great fit, a vocal leader with experience playing alongside skilled players," Bratt noted. "He wins battles and knows how to use our speed effectively."

Hughes specifically requested to team up with Brown, a move the coaching staff was open to exploring. "Brown's personality and experience make him a great asset," Coach Keefe remarked. "He boosts confidence and is a natural fit with Jack and Bratt."

Inside Game Focus

The Devils started their homestand strong but stumbled in their last two outings. The key issue?

Struggling to penetrate the opponent's defense. Against Detroit, they dominated puck possession but stayed on the perimeter.

With the Los Angeles Kings visiting, breaking through will be crucial.

"When facing a team like the Kings, getting inside is key," Bratt emphasized. "We need to simplify, get pucks to the net early, and disrupt their structure. Using our speed and skill will be essential to tire them out."

A Homecoming of Sorts

Coach Keefe enjoyed a special moment with family and friends from Prince Edward Island attending the practice. "They chose to come to Newark for spring break to watch the Devils," Keefe shared with a smile, highlighting his PEI roots.

Player Development

Coach Keefe is keen on seeing Maxim Tsyplakov step up. "I want Tsyplakov to take control and show his potential," Keefe said. "He's got something to offer, and yesterday was a positive step."

The Devils are focused and ready to turn things around, with a renewed emphasis on both offense and defense. As they prepare for the Kings, expect them to come out with intensity and determination.
