Devils Rout Caps With Statement Performance

Devils dominate the Capitals with stellar performances from Hughes and Bratt, showcasing their potential as they impact playoff races.

The New Jersey Devils showcased their prowess this week, delivering a mixed bag of performances against Metropolitan Division rivals. First, they stumbled against the Rangers, a team eyeing the future rather than the present. But just two days later, they turned the tables with an emphatic 7-3 victory over the Washington Capitals at the Prudential Center.

Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt were the stars of the show, each notching career-high five-point nights. Their offensive fireworks helped the Devils counterbalance some defensive lapses that left goalie Jake Allen in tough spots. Dawson Mercer also made his mark, netting two goals for the fourth time this season.

The loss was a tough blow for the Capitals, who missed a chance to leapfrog the Flyers and close in on the final Wild Card spot. Instead, they find themselves three points behind Ottawa, Detroit, and Columbus.

The Devils, playing for pride, struck early against Washington. Cody Glass opened the scoring with his 16th goal of the year, capping off a slick passing sequence with Nick Bjugstad and Lenni Hameenaho. Mercer quickly followed up, making it 2-0 with a backhander after a rebound.

Washington responded with a quick goal from Cole Hutson and tied it up with Pierre-Luc Dubois' power-play strike. However, Dougie Hamilton’s slapshot restored the Devils’ lead before the first period ended.

Despite being outshot 14-9 in the second period, the Devils' defense, led by Allen’s 14 saves, held firm. Hughes capitalized on New Jersey’s lone high-danger chance, extending the lead to 4-2 with a precise shot from a Bratt pass.

The dynamic duo struck again in the third period, with Hughes netting another goal off a Bratt assist. Although Tom Wilson pulled one back for Washington, Bratt's 20th goal of the season and Mercer’s empty-netter sealed the deal for the Devils.

Looking ahead, the Devils are set to host the Montreal Canadiens, a team in strong form, having gone 8-2-0 in their last 10 games. Cole Caufield is making headlines, nearing the Rocket Richard Award with 49 goals this season. Montreal's recent road success adds an intriguing layer to the upcoming matchup.

While the Devils’ playoff hopes are out of reach, they’re playing spoiler with enthusiasm. Fans can savor these performances, knowing they’re impacting the playoff race for teams like the Capitals, Flyers, and Penguins. As the season winds down, the question remains: will this late-season spark carry over into next year?
