The New Jersey Devils have turned their goalie picture into something a lot less settled by claiming Rémi Poirier off waivers from the Dallas Stars on Sunday.
On paper, the move adds another young netminder to a situation that already had Nico Daws in the middle of it, and that’s what makes this so odd. The Devils had seemed headed toward a standard two-goalie setup, especially with former New York Islanders goalie David Rittich going on waivers Sunday. Instead, New Jersey now has a third goalie in the mix, and the plan looks a lot more like the original three-goalie rotation idea than it did a day ago.

Poirier and Daws are in a similar spot in terms of what they want next. Both are trying to become NHL starters.
Both would probably prefer to be playing more than sitting in a backup role. Rittich, by contrast, would have come in with a different expectation for how he fit.
So the obvious question is what changed. Did Sunny Mehta and Sheldon Keefe come away unimpressed with Rittich in camp?
Are they uneasy about what they’ve seen from Daws in the preseason? Neither goalie has exactly lit it up, while Jake Allen has clearly been the best of the three.
What the Devils have said about Daws up to this point still suggests they believe in him. But claiming Poirier also gives them a safety net. If they need the roster space later, they can try to send Poirier back through waivers and return to the position they were in before, with Rittich as the third option if he clears.
The bigger ripple here is what it means for Daws. New Jersey has effectively handed him the present, while the long-term picture looks covered too, with Jakub Malek and Mikhail Yegorov still in the system.
If Daws doesn’t seize the job, the Devils can pivot. Allen should be able to keep them afloat this season, and the future is already on the way.
Still, Poirier is not just a placeholder. He has been legitimately strong for the Texas Stars, Dallas’s AHL affiliate, and his game has improved every season.
He also looked excellent in camp. In two preseason games, he allowed one 5v5 goal on 26 shots against, stopped every high-danger chance he faced, and then stepped in at the last minute for Jake Oettinger in Dallas’s final preseason game and posted a shutout.
Daws has not been awful, but he has given up too many soft goals early in the preseason. The coaching staff has said he is putting a lot of pressure on himself to get this done, and now the pressure only grows.
When he was the only young option, those mistakes could be absorbed. With Poirier in the building, they can cost him his spot.

Devils Goaltending Search Could Suddenly Open A Real Trade Chance
The goaltending market could get a lot more interesting for the Devils if Buffalo lands Connor Hellebuyck, because that kind of move would naturally ripple through the rest of the position. In that scenario, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen could become available, and New Jersey would be the kind of team that at least has to take notice as it looks for ways to stabilize its crease.
Of course, this is the sort of idea that lives on layers of hypotheticals, and the Devils would not be able to add Luukkonen without parting with one of their current goaltenders.
