Quinn Hughes’ next contract may be heading toward a number that would reset the market for defensemen, and the latest buzz points to Minnesota as the place where it could get done.
According to insider David Pagnotta, the Wild and Hughes are “getting there” on an extension, with the projected price sitting around $17 million per season, if not higher. Pagnotta shared the update on the “Hello Hockey” podcast, and it marks a notable shift after recent chatter suggested the talks in Minnesota had stalled and could even spill into trade speculation.
That would be a major development for a player Minnesota already paid a steep price to acquire. Hughes made an immediate impact after landing with the Wild, putting up 53 points in 48 games while logging more than 27 minutes a night. The move looked like a swing for the fences at the time, and the production made it look even better.
The biggest question hanging over everything was whether Hughes actually wanted to stay. At his end-of-season press conference two months ago, he said he was “definitely open to re-signing” and made it clear he preferred to sort out a new deal over the summer. Still, there was enough uncertainty around the situation to keep the rumor mill spinning.
If Minnesota does lock him in, it would also shut down a dream scenario that had been floating around New Jersey. There was hope Hughes might test free agency and join brothers Jack and Luke with the Devils, creating a sibling trio. New Jersey has the cap room to be in the mix and would absolutely have interest, but a Minnesota extension would take that option off the table.
It would also raise another question for the Wild: how much star power can one roster realistically absorb? A contract at or above $17 million would make Hughes the highest-paid defenseman in the NHL.
Add Kirill Kaprizov’s deal into the picture, and Minnesota would already be committing a massive share of its cap space. That leaves the obvious follow-up - if the Wild somehow found room for Jack Hughes too, just how top-heavy would this team become?

Devils Suddenly Have A Real Shot At Dylan Larkin
The Dylan Larkin trade chatter has quickly turned into one of the more intriguing offseason storylines, and the Devils have found themselves mentioned for good reason. Hockey insider David Pagnotta reported that Detroit is actively looking for packages for its captain after Larkin requested a trade, and New Jersey is among the clubs that has already shown serious interest. With cap room to work with and a deep stash of trade assets, the Devils have the kind of flexibility that can keep them in the conversation when other contenders are squeezed out.
For now, the market is being shaped by where Larkin is willing to go, and that has narrowed the field considerably. Vegas, Florida, Minnesota and Dallas are among the teams on his approved list, while other interested clubs are trying to position themselves for the moment the situation opens up further. New Jerseys path becomes much more realistic if the door widens, and the Devils have enough ammunition in both picks and young players to make Detroit listen if it does. [Read more 🡒]
Devils Are Betting On Nico Daws In A Risky Spot
Nico Daws has been around long enough now to stop feeling like just a prospect and start looking like part of the Devils goalie plan. New Jersey general manager Sunny Mehta backed that belief by giving Daws a new two-year contract, a move that suggests the organization sees a real path for him after he has already logged more than 50 NHL games and shown he can handle stretches of meaningful work when called upon.
The timing matters because the Devils are trying to map out their crease for the 2026-27 season, and Daws is in the mix with Jake Allen and David Rittich. There is still a risk in leaning on a young goaltender with limited runway, but the Devils seem willing to bet that Daws can keep building toward full-time NHL duties rather than remain a stopgap option. Another Jack Hughes Push Has Devils Fans Rolling Their Eyes
Rumors around Jack Hughes have a way of making the rounds, and this latest one has the kind of familiar shape that tends to set off Devils fans. The Minnesota Wild have been linked to the star center as they continue to look for a major swing, with general manager Bill Guerin still working through a trade market that has already included Dylan Larkin and the complications that come with Detroits asking price.
For New Jersey, the noise is part of a larger pattern around Hughes and the rest of the roster, especially with Guerins name surfacing again in connection to Devils talent after earlier deadline chatter involving Luke Hughes. The Wild may keep probing, and the pressure tactics reportedly being used are clearly meant to create movement, but this one still feels like the kind of idea that generates more frustration than traction.
