The situation at Arizona State has turned into something much bigger than hockey, and the focus remains squarely on Matthew Mayich.
Mayich, a St. Louis Blues prospect who transferred to Arizona State University earlier this year, collapsed during what has been described as a “military-style” workout on August 20.
He was taken to the hospital and is still in a coma. His lawyer, Robert Carey, says he has “no chance of recovery”.
A heat advisory was in place that day, even though the workout happened in the morning.
The workout itself has raised plenty of questions, but the answers are still scarce. Greg Powers is Arizona State’s head coach, though the morning session was handled by Tim Ziesel, a former U.S.
Army Green Beret who was not employed by the school. People around the situation have been left wondering about the conditions that day, whether the team had water breaks, and why the first practice was so intense.

Leonard Aragon, who is working with the Mayich family’s attorney at Hagens Berman Law Firm, said the family wants a full explanation and accountability.
“We want answers. We want more information about how this non-employee of the university was able to come out there and run these young men through a workout designed for elite special forces professionals, and why this happened.
After that, we want accountability. If it is found that people were negligent, we want accountability by the university.”
What happens next for Arizona State is still unclear. Pucks and Pitchforks reached out to Mike McMahon of College Hockey News, who explained that “there is a special window that opens for coaching changes.
It opens five days after a new coach is hired, or 31 days after a coach is fired/resigns. Whichever comes first.

For now, nobody knows whether the Sun Devils’ season will continue or what it would mean if it doesn’t. The players have returned to practice, and the coaching staff has been out recruiting in different states. The school has not addressed the situation beyond a social media post saying Mayich remains in its thoughts and prayers.
Ben Kevan, a New Jersey Devils prospect drafted last summer, is on the roster. If the team loses enough players and cannot field a roster, the season could be cancelled, though that would not automatically mean Powers and his staff are out of a job.
Some players could be eligible to return to their WHL teams, but Kevan did not play in the Canadian Hockey League. There is also the possibility that Kevan could transfer if given the chance, though there is no guarantee another team would take him after a slow freshman season with the Sun Devils.
Kevan has also been publicly supporting Mayich on Instagram as the hockey community continues to wait for answers and, more importantly, hope for a miracle.
