Devils Facing Tough Playoff Reality Amid Key Concerns

As the New Jersey Devils face slim playoff hopes, key player performances and challenges could shape their future strategy.

The New Jersey Devils are on a hot streak, winning nine of their last 12 games. However, despite this impressive run, their playoff hopes remain slim with just a 0.5% chance of making it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, according to Moneypuck. While the standings may not reflect their recent success, the positives from this stretch could be pivotal for next season.

Let's dive into the latest buzz around the Devils, including Anton Silayev's situation, Nico Daws' new record, and the status of Arseny Gritsyuk's injury.

Anton Silayev's Future in Question

The Devils' 2024 NHL Draft pick, Anton Silayev, a towering 6-foot-7 defenseman, has sparked plenty of excitement. Yet, his development seems to have stalled, possibly due to his KHL team's management decisions. His ice time took a nosedive this season, only to spike during the playoffs, adding to the mystery.

It's not uncommon for KHL players eyeing a move to North America to experience fluctuating ice time. NHL.com's Mike Morreale noted that "the Devils are working to have him available for 2026-27." However, there's talk that Silayev might stay in the KHL, which could be a setback for the Devils, who are eager to bring him over to ensure his growth isn't stunted.

Nico Daws Sets a Franchise Record

Nico Daws made headlines with a stellar 33-save performance in a 2-1 shootout win for the Utica Comets, becoming the franchise's wins leader with 56 victories. This AHL season, Daws is 13-16-10 with a 2.93 GAA and a .888 save percentage.

Interestingly, Daws often shines brighter in the NHL than the AHL. Head coach Sheldon Keefe praised him, saying, “He’s done a nice job here [in the NHL].”

With a 1.37 GAA and .947 save percentage in his last 10 NHL games, Daws has proven his mettle. However, with Allen and Markstrom healthy, there's currently no spot for him on the NHL roster.

Arseny Gritsyuk's Injury Update

In a recent victory over the Dallas Stars, Arseny Gritsyuk contributed with an assist and a plus-2 rating but was injured late in the game. Team reporter Amanda Stein shared that Gritsyuk “will not play the remainder of the #NJDevils road trip, or the game vs [Carolina] on Sunday.” Head coach Sheldon Keefe mentioned they’ll reassess once back home, but for now, he's week-to-week.

In Gritsyuk's absence, Lenni Hameenaho stepped up, taking on a larger role with 21 shifts against Nashville, the second-most in his young career. The Devils hope Gritsyuk returns quickly as he was beginning to hit his stride.

Stay tuned for more updates and insights as the Devils continue their journey through the season.
