Devils Face An Early Roster Test As Blue Line Help Arrives

With recent waiver moves and injury recoveries, the New Jersey Devils are poised to tackle early-season challenges and aim for a winning streak in their four upcoming games.

The Devils got a much-needed jolt Saturday with a 4-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks, and now they head into a four-game week with a few key storylines starting to sort themselves out. The power play finally did some damage - three of New Jersey’s goals came with the man advantage - and the club will try to turn that into something bigger as it wraps up its homestand and then rolls into a back-to-back.

The biggest roster move of the week came with Stefan Noesen, who cleared waivers after the Devils placed him there on Thursday. He had appeared in just two regular-season games for New Jersey, logging 14:48 of ice time with two shots on goal and two shot attempts. While he was on the ice, the Devils gave up two goals, both in high-danger situations, and their goaltenders posted an .846 save percentage.

Noesen’s season has been interrupted at every turn. He missed most of last year because of injury, first dealing with a groin issue early in 2025-26 before a knee injury required surgery in January and ended his season.

His best year came in 2024-25, when he put up 22 goals and 41 points, both career highs. He looked like he might be on his way back to that level in preseason, too, opening the scoring against the New York Rangers with a power-play goal and reminding the Devils why they brought him back as a free agent in 2024.

After clearing waivers on Friday, Noesen was loaned to the Utica Comets. That move also gave New Jersey nearly $1.3 million in cap space.

In goal, the Devils also had a new face get some work in. Remi Poirier joined practice on Thursday after being claimed off waivers from the Dallas Stars last month, and head coach Sheldon Keefe made it clear the team is still planning to roll with Jake Allen and Nico Daws in a 1A/1B setup for now.

“I just looked at it as a chance to get Remi out there, give him some different reps, a different feel, have him around the guys…We’ll just keep watching them and keeping them ready,” Keefe told reporters.

Poirier, though, knows exactly where he stands. He’s trying to make the most of the opportunity and keep himself in the conversation for an NHL debut, saying, “Really grateful that the team picked me, and hopefully at some point I can get a look, but right now I’m just working hard every day.”

Allen remains the obvious No. 1 in net. He has started three of the Devils’ four games already and most recently made his 500th career appearance against Vancouver. Even so, the club kept Poirier on the NHL roster over David Rittich, which leaves the door open for the young goalie to get a look at some point this season.

There’s also some relief on the injury front, especially on defense. Johnathan Kovacevic, who had been limited at training camp and started the season on the injured non-roster list, was activated off injured reserve on Saturday. He did not play against the Canucks, but the expectation is that he could return Monday against the Ottawa Senators.

Jonas Siegenthaler is back as well after leaving the game early against the Utah Mammoth and missing one practice. He returned against Vancouver and handled a heavy workload, finishing third on the team in ice time at 19:37 while skating on the second pair with Dougie Hamilton.

With Siegenthaler back and Kovacevic close, the Devils now have a little more flexibility on the blue line, and Declan Chisholm’s spot in the lineup is something to watch as the week unfolds.

The schedule is busy, starting Monday against Ottawa at Prudential Center and continuing Tuesday in Detroit, Thursday at home against the Rangers, and Saturday afternoon in Washington. The Devils’ week ahead also includes the NHL’s fourth annual Frozen Frenzy on ESPN in Detroit, a first regular-season meeting with the Rangers after New Jersey went 1-0-1 against them in preseason, and a rematch with the Capitals after the Devils beat them 7-3 on April 2.

Devils Suddenly Have A Depth Question Up Front Again

The Devils have had to shuffle their forward group again, recalling Stefan Noesen from Utica while Connor Brown goes on injured reserve after the injury he sustained on Sept. 28. Brown has still been skating, which gives New Jersey some flexibility, but for now the roster move leaves the club working a little thinner up front than it would like early in the season.

Noesen has already appeared in two games for New Jersey this year, and his return gives the coaching staff another familiar option as they manage the lineup. For the moment, he slides back into the role of the 13th forward, a useful spot to have covered when the wear and tear starts to pile up and the depth chart needs a quick answer. [Read more 🡒]
