Tom Brady’s return to Foxborough in the broadcast booth has already stirred up plenty of feelings, and Mike Vrabel did little to calm the temperature with the way he answered a simple question about seeing his old teammate this week.
Brady will be on the call for the Patriots’ Week 9 matchup against the Packers on Sunday, marking the first time he has been back at Gillette Stadium since his statue was unveiled last August. For Patriots fans, it’s a chance to revisit the dynasty years and everything Brady accomplished over two decades in New England. It’s also a reminder that his post-retirement comments have not always landed well with the fan base.
Since retiring and becoming a minority owner of the Raiders, Brady has made a few remarks that rubbed people the wrong way. He has spoken about what led to his departure for the Bucs in 2020, and earlier this year he said he “had no dog in the fight” when asked for his Super Bowl pick. That history has made Sunday’s return feel a little more complicated than a standard broadcaster visit.
Vrabel, who played with Brady and remains close with him, was asked Wednesday whether he’d have time to catch up with him before the game. His answer raised eyebrows.
Mike Vrabel on catching up with Tom Brady, who is returning to Foxborough as a broadcaster for the first time:
"I'm required contractually to catch up with him at some point. I'm sure it'll be a Zoom."

The “contractually obligated” line, repeated more than once, was enough to make some people wonder whether Vrabel was being serious or just having a little fun. He finished with a smirk, which made the whole thing feel even more like a carefully delivered dodge than a real tell.
That fits the relationship between the two. Vrabel and Brady have a brother-like dynamic and have never exactly been shy about giving each other a hard time. Still, the timing of the comment gave it extra weight, especially with some fans already sensitive about Brady’s recent public stance on the Patriots.
There was frustration earlier this year when Brady did not publicly back New England in the Super Bowl, and Seahawks head coach Mike MacDonald suggested the quarterback helped prepare their team for that game. Not long after that, Brady also supported Matthew Stafford’s MVP case over Drake Maye, which did not go over well with fans or, presumably, the locker room.
None of that proves anything about how Brady will handle Sunday’s broadcast. But it does explain why so many eyes will be on him, and why Patriots fans are hoping for a fair call when he’s back in their building.
Vrabel’s answer probably shouldn’t be read as anything more than Vrabel being Vrabel - a little dry, a little guarded, and very Belichick-leaning in the way he handles the media. But with Brady back in Foxborough, every word gets a little louder.

Tom Brady Had The Perfect Reaction To Gronk And Edelmans Latest Bit
Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman are back together in a familiar lane, this time using Fox Sports new digital series, The Gronk & Jules Show, to mix football talk with a little bit of personality. The project includes a song called Talkin Football, and the former Patriots teammates are leaning into the kind of easy chemistry that made them such a staple in New England for years.
Tom Brady noticed, too, and he had the sort of lighthearted reaction that fits the whole thing. He reposted the video with a joking comment, giving the series an extra boost from one of the most recognizable names in franchise history, while Gronk and Edelman continue building out a show that will feature conversations with players, coaches and insiders. Patriots Fans Have A Few Week 9 Results To Watch Closely
With the Patriots still trying to sort out their place in the AFC race, Week 9 brings a few scoreboard-watching opportunities that could matter almost as much as what happens in Foxborough. The schedule includes matchups like the Jaguars at the Ravens and the Jets at the Chiefs, and both games carry ripple effects for New England as the playoff picture starts to take shape.
Baltimore is one of the more interesting teams to track because of the way its quarterback situation has developed, while New Yorks trip to Kansas City is another one Patriots fans will have an eye on for reasons beyond simple rivalry. New England has its own business to handle, but these are the kinds of results that can quietly change the math around the AFC standings before the season gets much deeper. [Read more 🡒]
Patriots Suddenly Face A Running Back Decision They Didn't Expect
TreVeyon Hendersons availability has suddenly become a major Patriots storyline after a medical emergency sent the rookie running back to the hospital and left his return date unclear. For a team that had been counting on him as part of its backfield plans, the situation has quickly turned from a football issue into a broader roster concern, with New England now having to think through how it handles the position if the uncertainty lingers.
With the trade deadline approaching, the Patriots are at least being mentioned in the kind of running back speculation that usually surfaces only when a team feels pressed to act. The names being floated around the league are the sort that would reshape a backfield in a hurry, but for now it is still just that, speculation, as New England waits for more clarity on Henderson and weighs whether outside help becomes necessary.
