The Houston Texans have been hit hard at receiver, and the latest blow came when Jayden Higgins went down with a season-ending injury. That left Nico Collins carrying the top of the depth chart, but the Texans clearly needed another real piece in the room.
They found one in a trade with the New England Patriots for Kayshon Boutte.
Tom Pelissero of The Ringer reported the deal this way: "Trade! The Patriots are sending WR Kayshon Boutte to the Texans for safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick, sources tell @ringer @netflixsports," Pelissero reports.
The pick attached to Reed ended up being a 2028 seventh-rounder, and for Houston, that price brings in a receiver who immediately changes the look of the group. The Texans do give up a young safety in Reed, but the return is a much-needed boost at a position that had suddenly gotten thin.
After the move, Houston’s receiver room now includes Nico Collins, Kayshon Boutte, Jaylin Noel, Xavier Hutchinson, Tank Dell, Justin Watson, Lewis Bond, Sterling Shepard, Zay Jones, Josh Kelly, Jared Wayne, Jha'Quan Jackson, and Treyvhon Saunders.
That’s a much sturdier setup than the one Houston had right after Higgins’ injury. Collins and Boutte now sit at the top of the group, with Hutchinson, Noel, and Dell giving the Texans a workable batch of depth behind them. Watson also profiles as a serviceable sixth option.
Not everyone listed there is likely to make the final cut, and several of those names could end up on the practice squad instead. Still, having veterans like Jones and Shepard in the mix gives Houston more flexibility heading into the upcoming season.
The source material also points to what Boutte can mean in a bigger-picture sense. Drake Maye and the Patriots made the Super Bowl with Boutte and Stefon Diggs, along with a cast of mediocre backups. Houston’s receiver group is better, and with a stronger defense than New England had, the only real questions are Stroud and the offensive line.
For the Texans, this is the kind of move that helps patch a real hole and gives the offense some upside back. Boutte doesn’t just replace a body - he makes the room look far more interesting.
