NFL legend Steve Smith Sr. has weighed in on the New England Patriots' free agency strategy, and his insights might surprise some fans. While the buzz around acquiring a top-tier wide receiver is loud, Smith suggests the Patriots might be eyeing a different target: the tight end position.
The Patriots have enjoyed solid production from their veteran tight ends, Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper. Last season, Henry snagged 60 catches for 768 yards and seven touchdowns, while Hooper contributed 21 catches for 263 yards and two touchdowns. However, both players are now 31, with Hooper hitting the open market as an unrestricted free agent and Henry nearing the end of his contract.
Smith pointed out, “I think the thing people aren't paying attention to with New England is the tight end position. They may do some things that may shock some people.” His comments, shared during a phone interview with ESPN's Mike Reiss, highlight the strategic tendencies of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, known for maximizing the tight end role in his schemes.
The free agent market offers intriguing possibilities, such as Baltimore Ravens' Isaiah Likely and Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Cade Otton. Given McDaniels' track record, infusing some youthful playmaking talent at tight end could be a game-changer for the Patriots.
Whether the Patriots will make their move in free agency or look to the 2026 NFL Draft remains to be seen. Either way, addressing the tight end position could be a pivotal step in enhancing their offensive arsenal.
