The Patriots made waves in free agency with the surprising release of wide receiver Stefon Diggs, just a year into his three-year deal. While Eliot Wolf has left the door open for a possible return, Diggs remains unsigned, fueling speculation about his next move.
If Diggs doesn't return to New England, he could become a formidable opponent within the AFC East in 2026. Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report sees the Miami Dolphins as a prime destination for the four-time Pro Bowler, especially after their trades involving Jaylen Waddle and the release of Tyreek Hill.
"Diggs would fit perfectly in Miami, where they need a top-tier receiver to pair with new quarterback Malik Willis," Knox suggests. His familiarity with offensive coordinator Brian Daboll also makes the Tennessee Titans a viable option, pairing him with second-year quarterback Cam Ward.
For the Patriots, Diggs landing in Tennessee would be less of a concern since they don’t face the Titans until 2027. However, a move to Miami could be problematic.
Diggs' potential return to the AFC East would amplify the impact of the Patriots' decision to release him. Following a standout 2025 season, where he became the first Patriot to surpass 1,000 receiving yards since Julian Edelman in 2019, Diggs' leadership and on-field performance seemed indispensable.
Despite this, factors like salary or other issues led Wolf and the Patriots to cut ties, leaving them searching for a new wide receiver. They've signed Romeo Doubs, but seeing Diggs dominate within the division again, particularly with the Dolphins, could make his release sting even more.
Diggs' presence would fill Miami's void left by Waddle and Hill, instantly becoming Malik Willis' top target and posing a significant challenge to the Patriots' defense. This scenario could make Wolf's decision more regrettable, especially if the Patriots fail to find an adequate replacement.
Patriots fans will be watching closely, hoping Diggs finds a home outside the division next season.
