Stefon Diggs keeps drifting toward the same landing spot, and the NFL chatter around him has started to make the fit in Washington feel impossible to ignore.
When the Patriots unexpectedly released Diggs earlier this year, the idea was simple enough: bring him back on a team-friendly deal, give Drake Maye a better supporting cast, and add a proven weapon to a receiving room that was already shaping up to be important in a tough season. Eliot Wolf initially sounded open to the idea, and Diggs echoed that sentiment on social media. But as time has gone on, that mutual interest has faded.
New moves in New England only pushed the door shut further. The Patriots went on to sign Romeo Doubs in free agency and trade for A.J. Brown, which seemed to remove Diggs from the picture entirely.
Now the bigger question is where he goes next, and the answer appears to be tied to the same market that had been circling Brandon Aiyuk. Diggs has been linked to several teams involved in those talks, and with Aiyuk having burned bridges with multiple possible suitors, those clubs have started shifting their attention toward other veteran receivers.
The Commanders stand out most. They were in the lead for Aiyuk for much of the offseason, and with Deebo Samuel now officially gone for the 49ers, Diggs looks like the main target left on the board.
That makes Washington the clearest possible fit. The Commanders are coming off a run to the NFC Championship Game in Jayden Daniels’ rookie season, and they’re trying to take another step forward.
Terry McLaurin is already established as the WR1, but the team is still looking for more reliable options behind him. Diggs would give them exactly that: a proven pass-catcher who can take pressure off McLaurin and give Daniels another trusted target.
Even with Ricky Pearsall out for the season, the 49ers do not appear to have changed course on Aiyuk or shown interest in Diggs. That leaves Washington as the team most likely to make the move for the 4-time Pro Bowler.
Diggs’ 2025 season was not his cleanest, but he still topped 1,000 receiving yards and played a major role in the Patriots’ run to the Super Bowl. The production is still there, and so is the value of having a veteran who can steady a young passing game.
There’s also the market reality. At this stage of the offseason, Diggs may be available on a cheaper deal than he would have been months ago, and the lack of league-wide interest could make him more willing to take that kind of contract.
Washington’s outlook helps too. If the Commanders are positioned to be competitive in the NFC East and push for the playoffs, that becomes a tough opportunity to pass up.
Diggs has already said he believes he is the best WR2 in the league, and that mindset fits a move like this. He wouldn’t be asked to carry everything, but he would still have a significant role and a chance to matter immediately.
For now, the Commanders look like the obvious team to watch. A signing would not be a surprise, and it could happen sooner rather than later.
