The New England Patriots were in hot pursuit of Maxx Crosby, looking to strengthen their defense after a tough Super Bowl 60 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. With the offseason in full swing, the Patriots aimed to make a splash for the 2026 campaign.
However, the Baltimore Ravens swooped in, offering two first-round picks to the Las Vegas Raiders for Crosby. The deal fell through when Crosby didn't pass his physical, leaving the Raiders holding onto their star, at least until the trade deadline.
This twist leaves the Patriots searching for other options to fill the void on their defensive line. NFL analyst Matt Okada suggests the Patriots could either trade for another standout pass rusher or utilize their No. 31 draft pick to snag a promising edge rusher, complemented by a seasoned veteran. Okada points out that while Crosby would have been a game-changer, there are still viable paths forward.
Among the veterans still available, names like Joey Bosa, Haason Reddick, Cameron Jordan, and former Patriot Kyle Van Noy are floated as potential additions. Each of these players could bring valuable experience and leadership to a young defensive front.
Joey Bosa, for instance, spent last season with the Buffalo Bills, where he showcased his ability to impact games. In 15 appearances, Bosa recorded 29 tackles, 16 quarterback hits, five sacks, and defended two passes. Although he's no longer in his prime Chargers form, at 30, Bosa's savvy and skill could be instrumental in mentoring a rookie while helping the Patriots ramp up their pass rush.
As the Patriots navigate their options, the strategy of blending youthful talent with veteran wisdom could be the key to revamping their defense and making another run at the title.
