Romeo Doubs didn’t need long to have one of those games receivers hope disappears quietly into the background. Instead, it came right away in his Patriots debut.
The veteran wideout, who joined New England on a four-year, $68 million free agency deal, was held without a catch in Wednesday night’s 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. It was the fifth catch-less game of his NFL career, with one each in 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and now 2026.
That’s not the start anyone wanted from one of the team’s biggest spring additions, but Doubs didn’t hide from it afterward.
“I just wasn’t locked in,” Doubs told reporters. “That’s all.
I mean, the video speaks for itself. I’ll be better moving forward.”
The Patriots brought in two headline receivers this offseason, pairing Doubs with A.J. Brown, who arrived in a trade from the Eagles.
Wednesday’s opener in Seattle was supposed to be the first chance for both to leave a real imprint on the offense. Instead, both came away with little to show for it.
Brown’s night ended in the third quarter when he exited with an ankle injury after catching three passes for 26 yards. Doubs stayed on the field, but his three targets never turned into completions. One was intercepted, another was dropped on what would have been a big gain, and the third fell incomplete on third down.
Doubs was direct about where the blame belonged.
“I just put that on my end,” he said. “I’ll just be able to move forward.
That had nothing to do with Drake [Maye]. That was 150% me, and I’ll be better.”
His quarterback wasn’t the only teammate to have a rough night, and Doubs still got support in the locker room after the game. Team captain Morgan Moses made it clear the wide receiver won’t be defined by one bad opener.
“He’s the definition of a leader,” Moses said. “All of us got some things that we look in the mirror at ourselves and say, ‘Hey, we can get better.’
Going back to the drawing board. I think Game 1 is always the hardest, because you never know what they’re going to throw out there.
But you just go play football. You line the football up wherever you line it up, and you go out there and you play football.
There’s some things that you want to get back that you can’t get back, but it’s going to make you a better player for the rest of the season.”
For Doubs, the mission now is simple: justify the trust New England showed in March and turn a forgettable debut into a footnote.
“Part of my job as a player is to make this team better,” he said, “and I’ll be better moving forward.”
