Romeo Doubs Is Giving Patriots Fans A Very Familiar Debate

Optimism surrounds Romeo Doubs' potential with the Patriots as the promising receiver looks to solidify his role and justify his hefty contract.

Patriots fans have seen both sides of Romeo Doubs through his first month in New England.

There have been flashes that justify the four-year, $68 million deal he signed this past offseason, and there have also been stretches that make the whole thing look shaky. His debut was rough.

Week 2 brought a career-high 96 yards. Week 4 ended with two touchdowns.

Week 5 was nearly a blank, with one catch on three targets for 16 yards as New England rolled to 45 points against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The inconsistency has shown up in more than just the box score. Doubs has had drops on throws he should have finished, including the egregious, essentially game-losing drop in Week 1.

He also played a major part in Drake Maye’s lone interception against the Buffalo Bills in Week 4. And while A.J.

Brown’s ankle sprain in the first game forced Doubs into a bigger role, that only explains so much of the uneven start.

That’s why the early returns haven’t matched the contract, especially when Doubs is essentially filling the Stefon Diggs spot. He has not looked like a finished product yet, and New England has paid for a player it expects to be more reliable than this.

Still, there’s enough here to believe the Patriots made the right move.

Doubs has already shown the kind of upside that made him appealing in the first place. He had a 63-yard catch against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2, and he has been effective in the red zone, which was one of the main reasons New England wanted him. The playmaking is real, even if it has come in bursts.

There’s also a lot to work with in how he fits the offense. The 26-year-old can work short, intermediate, and deep routes, and he can line up all over the formation.

Josh McDaniels clearly values that kind of flexibility. New England just hasn’t been able to fully use it yet with Brown out and Doubs asked to help cover for that absence.

That should change if Brown returns soon, which would let Doubs settle into the role he was supposed to have all along as the No. 2 receiver. On paper, he pairs well with Brown, who can stretch the field and force defenses to respect the deep ball. And as the season goes on, Doubs keeps building chemistry with Maye and the rest of the offense.

The start has been uneven. The talent is still there. And for the Patriots, the bet is that Romeo Doubs hasn’t come close to showing his best yet.

Patriots Win Still Exposed A Secondary Problem Fans Can't Ignore

The Patriots 45-17 win over the Raiders looked convincing on the scoreboard, but it also highlighted a familiar problem in the defensive backfield. Las Vegas tight end Brock Bowers kept finding room against New Englands smaller defensive backs, using his size to create mismatches and finishing with a productive afternoon that underscored why the matchup was such a concern.

New England does have options if it wants to get bigger on the back end, and the conversation now turns to possible help at cornerback and beyond. Free agent Jeff Okudah and Chiefs cornerback Kristian Fulton are among the names to watch, while practice squad options like Elliott Davison and Alzillion Hamilton also give the Patriots some internal choices as they try to address a weakness that showed up even in a lopsided win. A.J. Browns Return Looks Even Better For Patriots Fans

A.J. Browns move to New England before the 2026 season already looked like a major addition when the Patriots brought him in, and it has only become easier to see why since then. Brown has settled into the offense smoothly, giving the Patriots the kind of established playmaker they wanted, while the conversation around the deal has only grown louder as fans and analysts continue to weigh what it means for both sides.

The contrast has been hard to miss, because the Patriots have reason to feel good about how the trade has worked out for them. Philadelphia, meanwhile, has been dealing with injuries, coaching questions and a losing record, which has made the optics of the swap look even better from New Englands perspective and kept the trade among the more talked-about moves of the young season. Patriots Jets Matchup Features More Familiar Faces Than Fans Realize

Sundays AFC East meeting has an extra layer of familiarity attached to it, with several players on both rosters having spent time in Foxborough and Florham Park during their NFL careers. The Patriots-Jets rivalry has always carried its own edge, but this one comes with more shared history than most fans probably realize, thanks to a collection of veterans whose paths have already crossed both organizations.

Andrew Beck, Chukwuma Okorafor, Morgan Moses, Alijah Vera-Tucker and Greg Van Roten are among the names tied to that overlap, giving the matchup a little more carryover from one locker room to the other. For New England, it is a reminder that roster-building in the division can be a revolving door, and that plenty of the players on the field Sunday will be working from a familiar scouting report even if the uniforms have changed.
