Robert Kraft’s push to remove Macklemore from Ed Sheeran’s tour has now been tied to three more NFL owners, according to new reporting.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, and Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie supported Kraft’s effort to keep Macklemore off the stage. None of the three had publicly commented on the report at the time of writing.
The controversy started after Macklemore said “Free Palestine” during a September 4 show at MetLife Stadium. In a lengthy Instagram post last week, he claimed Kraft called Sheeran directly and blocked him from performing at Gillette Stadium. He also said Kraft brought other stadium owners into a joint ultimatum aimed at the tour.
Kraft, for his part, gave his own explanation in a statement to press outlets. He pointed to Macklemore’s remarks in New Jersey and what he described as “a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery that has been deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community.”
The fallout reached a personal level, too. Kraft reportedly spent 40 minutes on the phone with Sheeran, who has been friends with him for years and performed at Kraft’s 2022 wedding.
Macklemore answered the backlash by saying he would donate $1 million from tour earnings to organizations that support Palestinian relief efforts. He then challenged Kraft to match it.
Days later, Kraft said he would give $2 million toward humanitarian aid in the region. According to Kraft’s statement, Sheeran had asked for that pledge during their earlier call.
The tour has kept losing support acts in the wake of Macklemore’s removal. Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe, and Sheeran’s backing band, Beoga, have all exited in solidarity.
Sheeran’s next date is Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, which means the tour will go on without an opening act for the first time.
