The Patriots left Sunday with a third straight win, but Mike Vrabel didn’t leave feeling good about how it looked.
New England beat the New York Jets 26-19 to improve to 4-2, yet the head coach was quick to frame the afternoon in blunt terms. For him, the result mattered more than the performance, and he didn’t hide how close the game felt to slipping away.
“We’re lucky to win, is probably where I’d start,” Vrabel said during his postgame presser. “But we’re happy that we won. We’ll enjoy it for about an hour, and then we’re going to focus on the next task.”
Vrabel doubled down when asked to explain the word choice.
“Fortunate, whatever - we just didn’t play very well,” Vrabel added. “We tried to beat ourselves, but we made enough plays in critical situations to help us get through here today.”
That tone stood in contrast to where the Patriots had been heading over the previous two weeks. They arrived in Week 6 after what looked like their strongest stretch of the season: a 29-26 road win over the Bills that erased the memory of their 1-2 start, followed by a decisive takedown of a Raiders team that had won three of its first four.
Against the Jets, though, Vrabel said he didn’t see the same forward movement.
“You have to be able to continue to improve, and I don’t feel like we did,” he said. “We won, which is the most important thing.
We just - I don’t think we improved from what we had shown the previous two weeks, and I have to figure out why. That’s my job.
My job’s to get us to win and also to get us to improve.”
Cornerback Christian Gonzalez echoed that the clean-up work starts with details, not celebration.
“There are definitely things we’ve got to clean up for sure,” Gonzalez said. “We’ve got to clean up two-minute drives.
We’ve got to clean that up. And in the backend, we’ve got to do what we do as a defense.
We’ve got to not let them drive down the field, get down there and get points. The offense did an amazing job getting down the field, taking time off.
The defense, we didn’t do our part. But we got out with a win and that’s what matters.”

Patriots Turned A Messy Jets Game On A Few Huge Moments
The Patriots survived a messy one against the Jets by leaning on the kinds of plays that usually decide tight division games: defensive stops, successful fourth-down calls and a pair of scoring drives when the margin for error was thin. Drake Maye helped steer the offense, and New England kept finding just enough answers to stay in front in a game that never really settled into a rhythm.
What stood out most was how the Patriots handled the critical moments near the goal line, where the Jets never managed to cash in. New England also got a crucial final drive to close it out, but the win carried some lingering questions because a key playmaker was shaken up after a long touchdown catch, leaving one more layer of uncertainty hanging over an otherwise needed result. Patriots Need A.J. Brown To Answer One Big Offensive Concern
After getting past the Jets in a 26-19 Week 6 win, the Patriots are back to dealing with the bigger question that has hovered over their offense for most of the month: how much better does it look when A.J. Brown is available? Brown missed four games with an ankle injury, and his absence has left New England searching for more consistency and a clearer passing rhythm as it heads into a Thursday night trip to Chicago.
Draye Maye was candid about what Brown means to the offense, which is why his status looms so large for Week 7. Brown said he is absolutely good to play against the Bears, giving the Patriots a potential boost at exactly the right time, but the real test is whether his return can address the concern that has lingered since he went down. Patriots Suddenly Have An O-Line Depth Problem They Can't Ignore
The Patriots had to move quickly after their game against the Jets left them thin along the offensive line, and on Tuesday the team brought back a pair of familiar faces to help patch things up. Andrew Rupcich and Jacob Rizy were signed to the practice squad, a reminder of how fast depth can get tested in the NFL and how often teams have to lean on the players they already know.
Mike Vrabel confirmed the additions during his press conference and said the club has to stay flexible with the roster as injuries pile up. Rupcich and Rizy were around earlier in training camp and the preseason before being released, so this is less a fresh search than a return to names the Patriots already had in the building, with more roster movement still likely as they work through the fallout from Sunday.
