The Patriots may already be regretting the decision to move on from Kayshon Boutte, and the timing could get even worse this weekend.
Boutte was traded last month because of a crowded receiver room and what was described as his perceived value, a deal that brought New England a young safety and a seventh-round pick. The move came despite the fact that he had already carved out a reputation as a real threat since being drafted in 2023. Still, he couldn’t convince the Patriots’ coaches that he belonged on the 2026 roster, and now he’s trying to make his mark in Houston.
That switch has the potential to sting even more after A.J. Brown suffered an injury against the Seahawks last week.
The Patriots could have used Boutte’s production over the next four to six weeks, but instead he’s in position to help C.J. Stroud in a Texans offense that may need another weapon.
His first week in Houston didn’t exactly announce his arrival. Against the Bills, Boutte was targeted twice and came away with one catch for 21 yards. It was a quiet opener for the 24-year-old, but it was also just Week 1.
Now there’s a real opening.
According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, Nico Collins suffered an injury in the season opener, and while it’s not believed to be serious, his status for this weekend’s game against the Bengals is "in jeopardy." That could put Boutte right in the middle of the action.
Collins has quickly become Stroud’s favorite target behind tight end Dalton Schultz, so if he can’t go, Boutte has a chance to step into that void. It would be the kind of stage that can change how a player is viewed in a hurry, especially against another AFC frontrunner.
A strong performance could do more than just help the Texans this week. It could push Boutte further up the depth chart even after Collins returns, and it might help him lock down a bigger role in the offense going forward. It could also put him in line for an extension from Houston or make him a more attractive free-agent option for receiver-needy teams next spring.
For Boutte, the motivation is obvious. Being traded after showing how good he could be in New England has to sting, and now he has a chance to turn that frustration into the best season of his career so far. If that happens, it would only make the deal look worse for the Patriots and better for the Texans.
And if Houston really did land a steal, this trade could linger over New England for a long time.
