Gabe Jacas is on the field now, but the conversation around the Patriots’ second-round pick hasn’t moved past his left knee.
After a contract stalemate stretched deep into July, Jacas finally signed with New England on July 25 and reported to practice. He has said he is “100% healthy” and that his focus is football.
But the unusual language tucked into his four-year deal has kept the spotlight fixed on one specific issue: a rare injury waiver tied to his left knee for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. If that joint suffers a recurring injury, the Patriots would be able to void future financial guarantees.
That clause is the kind of thing that immediately makes people look twice, and the medical concern behind it only sharpened the attention. A Boston Globe report cited sports health experts warning about a “large osteochondral defect” in Jacas’ left knee.
Dr. David Chao, the former Chargers head physician and now an expert at SICScore.com, said the situation is comparable to Jadeveon Clowney’s career path, with chronic knee problems following early microfracture surgery.
Chao described a large osteochondral lesion as a serious structural problem in the cartilage, one that affects the long-term durability of the joint. He also said Jacas’ draft position would have taken a hit if NFL teams had known the full extent of the issue before April. In his view, simply landing a second NFL contract would be a significant accomplishment given the risk involved.
The fact that this issue exists helps explain why Jacas’ deal took so long to come together in the first place. Ben Volin of The Boston Globe noted that injury waivers are extremely uncommon in rookie contracts, largely because prospects with known medical red flags usually slide during the draft process instead. Jacas, though, was durable at Illinois, appearing in 50 games with 43 starts across four seasons.
For now, the Patriots are moving ahead with a player they drafted to help build on their 2025 AFC title run. But even as Jacas settles into New England, his left knee is the part of this story that isn’t going away.
