Patriots Suddenly Have An RB Depth Problem They Can't Ignore

A gamble on inexperienced talent has left the Patriots scrambling for depth, as they revisit veteran options like Jamaal Williams to shore up their shaky running back lineup.

The Patriots’ search for running back help has circled back to a familiar place: the veteran market they passed on months ago.

New England went into the 2026 offseason with options on the table for the RB3 job, including Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler. Instead of adding an established back, the Patriots used one of their final draft picks on Alabama’s Jam Miller in the seventh round.

That choice has not worked out the way they hoped. Miller did not make the final 53-man roster, and the team had to pivot to the trade market before the regular season, bringing in Corey Kiner from the Arizona Cardinals.

Kiner has not given the Patriots much so far, either. Through his time in New England, he has 14 carries for 29 yards, a 2.1 yards-per-carry average that has done little to stabilize the back end of the depth chart.

That context helps explain why the Patriots recently worked out Jamaal Williams, a veteran who led the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns in 2022 and has not played a snap in the league since 2024. Williams was in for a workout on Tuesday, according to reporting shared by Jack Aylmer, who noted that the back has totaled 1,069 carries for 4,122 yards and 32 touchdowns, plus 187 receptions for 1,310 yards and eight scores in 117 career regular-season games.

The missed opportunity in the offseason stands out because the Patriots already had Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson in place. They did not need to chase a headline-grabbing addition, but a dependable veteran who could handle a bigger role if injuries hit would have made sense. White and Ekeler both fit that description, and both would have come cheaply.

White has already shown what he can do in 2026. He has 22 carries for 100 yards and nine catches for 51 yards and a touchdown against the Washington Commanders, and he also has three kickoff returns for 97 yards, a total that would currently rank second on the Patriots.

He has been a productive receiver out of the backfield as well, with 115 catches for 942 yards and nine touchdowns from 2023 to 2024. White signed a one-year, $2 million deal this spring, which only adds to the sense that New England could have made that move without much risk.

Ekeler would have been even more affordable, since he stayed unsigned until just this past week. In his lone game this year for Washington, he had four carries for 29 yards and an 11-yard catch.

He also has the résumé of a player who has done plenty of damage before, with 900-plus rushing yards and double-digit touchdowns in both 2021 and 2022. A torn Achilles last season created uncertainty about what he would look like coming back, but he still drew interest from the Carolina Panthers before returning to Washington.

Williams is trying to get back into the league, and this is not the first time this season that a return has been discussed. Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently said Williams reached out about potentially rejoining the team, where he once set the franchise’s single-season rushing touchdown record.

For New England, the workout looks like due diligence, but it also reflects a real concern. The Patriots are one injury away from being thin at running back again.

Jordan Schultz reported that Williams has been training at 220 pounds and is “in the best shape of his NFL career right now.” Schultz also said the Patriots brought him in for a workout Tuesday and that Williams is expected to land with a team.

Williams’ last NFL action came in 2024 with the New Orleans Saints, when he posted 48 carries for 164 yards and one touchdown. Even with that limited production, the Patriots appear to be keeping a close eye on him as they search for help behind Stevenson and Henderson.

Patriots Fans Are Starting To See Efton Chism Very Differently

Efton Chism has gone from an afterthought to a name Patriots fans are starting to track a lot more closely. The second-year slot receiver has shown enough in recent weeks to get noticed, including a memorable catch in Week 4, and his timing makes the interest feel even more relevant with injuries thinning out the receiver room. Around New England, that has naturally brought more attention to what kind of role he might be able to carve out in the offense.

Patriots insider Tom E. Curran has been part of that conversation, weighing Chisms style and how it might fit if the team needs another dependable option inside. Chism has already invited the easy comparisons, too, with some seeing shades of Julian Edelman and noting his friendly relationship with the former Patriots star. The bigger question now is whether what Chism has flashed can keep translating once the workload and the expectations both start to rise. [Read more 🡒]

Former Patriots Super Bowl Champions Death Left A Family Facing Heartbreak

Jordan Deveys death this summer has left a painful void around a family that had already built a life well beyond his NFL days. The former offensive lineman, who spent eight seasons in the league with teams including the Patriots, Chiefs and 49ers, won a Super Bowl in New England before moving into coaching high school football in Idaho. His wife, Linsey, chose their 15th wedding anniversary to publicly share the news, underscoring just how abruptly the familys world changed.

What she described next made the loss even harder to absorb, especially for their children and their 11-year-old son Cash. Linsey said the emotional toll has been overwhelming as the family tries to navigate grief in the open, with the story of Jordan Deveys death now carrying a deeply personal dimension that reaches far beyond football and into the private pain left behind. Drake Maye Faces A Bigger Test As Patriots Hope Momentum Is Real

Drake Maye has already gone through the kind of early-season adjustment every young quarterback eventually faces, with opponents building a better scouting file and forcing him to work through it. After a challenging start, he showed clear progress against the Bills, and now the Patriots are trying to figure out whether that performance was the beginning of something real or just one sharp afternoon in an uneven stretch.

The next chance to answer that comes against a Raiders defense preparing with full respect for what Maye can do. If he keeps building on the signs he showed last week, New England could start turning recent momentum into a genuine winning streak, which is exactly the sort of development this team has been waiting to see from its quarterback.
