TreVeyon Henderson’s Week 1 outlook is looking shaky as the Patriots’ season opener against the Seattle Seahawks draws near.
New England was back on the field Sunday, but Henderson was not among the players practicing again after suffering an ankle injury and missing time since Aug. 24. With the opener set for Wednesday night, the Patriots still don’t have a clean answer on whether their rookie back will be available.
According to Alex Barth of 98.5 The Sports Hub, Henderson remained out on Sunday, along with Christian Barmore and Ben Brown.
"Christian Barmore is a new absence at Patriots practice today. TreVeyon Henderson and Ben Brown are also not on the field," Barth reported.
That absence mattered even more after head coach Mike Vrabel suggested on Saturday that Henderson might be back on the field. He never returned then, and he was still absent Sunday, leaving his status for Week 1 up in the air until New England releases its first injury report later in the day.
If Henderson can’t go, the workload should tilt heavily toward Rhamondre Stevenson. ESPN’s Mike Reiss described Stevenson as the clear lead back in New England, and the roster picture backs that up.
The Patriots have only one other running back on the 53-man roster in Corey Kiner, which means they’ll almost certainly bring up another option from the practice squad. Hassan Haskins and Lan Larison are the two names in the mix.
Haskins offers the more experienced resume, while Larison has the advantage of familiarity with Josh McDaniels’ system. Reiss pointed to that distinction this way:
"Larison gets the edge in terms of background in coordinator Josh McDaniels' system (critical with pass protection in mind), while Haskins would be the pick if NFL experience (44 games) was deemed a priority. Both factor into the mix on special teams, especially on punt protection, which is an area the Patriots have spent countless hours practicing throughout the summer," Reiss said.
However the Patriots sort through that backup role, Stevenson would be in line for a big slice of the touches if Henderson sits. Kiner and whichever practice-squad back gets elevated would then be expected to help fill in behind him.
