Patriots Suddenly Have A Real Center Battle To Watch

Undrafted rookie Jacob Rizy is stepping up under pressure for the Patriots, making a strong case for himself in the wake of teammate Ben Brown's injury.

When the Patriots lost Ben Brown in the first quarter of their preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts, the plan at center changed fast. Third-stringer Jacob Rizy was thrown into the action earlier than expected, and the undrafted rookie wound up logging 55 straight snaps to finish the 13-13 tie.

That stretch included work with both backup quarterbacks, Tommy DeVito and Behren Morton. And with Brown expected to miss multiple weeks, Rizy could be looking at a similar workload over the next two preseason games against the Eagles and Browns.

Rizy isn’t spending much time looking that far ahead. After Monday’s training camp practice at Gillette Stadium, he said his focus is simply on surviving the daily grind and getting better in small steps.

“I don’t really know what to expect. It’s the NFL.

I’ve only ever played high school and then college, and I knew this would be a step up,” he said following Monday’s training camp practice at Gillette Stadium. “Just trying to find my way around, get better every day.

Trying to get 1% better ever day.”

The Patriots signed Rizy after his six-year college run at Harvard and Florida State, where he started 27 games and played multiple spots along the offensive line. Since arriving in New England as an undrafted free agent, he’s spent a lot of his time sharpening his work at center. That preparation put him in the No. 3 spot at the position behind Jared Wilson and Brown before the Colts game.

Now Brown is out for the foreseeable future, and Rizy has moved up the ladder into “one snap away” territory. He said the injury to Brown hit hard, but once the moment arrived, there wasn’t time to dwell on it.

“The first thing that crossed my mind was I know how much Ben has been working, and it was really unfortunate to see that happen. You never wish that for your teammates, and that was super unfortunate,” he said.

“But I knew I had to go play, so I just kind of went play football, pretty much. … It’s been pretty fun.

Speed’s been pretty fast. But I’m just trying to enjoy it and get better.”

Mike Vrabel liked what he saw from the rookie center in his first NFL action. The Patriots head coach said Rizy handled the surprise call-up well and didn’t look overwhelmed by the situation.

“He’s battled, he’s competed, he’s studied. For a young center to go in there, it was good,” Vrabel said.

“I didn’t think that the game, the way that he got thrown into the game by injury, was too big for him. He was prepared, and I think he’ll continue to work and understand that this is a little different game than probably what he was used to in college.

But he is figuring it out, figuring out angles, and those things are so critical for interior linemen where they have to go to get ‘backers at the second level. ‘These guys maybe react a little quicker at this level, so I have to take a little better angle.’”

Whether Rizy keeps climbing during camp and the preseason is still to be determined, especially with veteran interior lineman Greg Van Roten now in the mix after signing as a free agent. But the rookie’s first real test went well, and he’s already shown he’s ready for more.

Patriots Trade Buzz Around Kayshon Boutte Just Got More Interesting

The Patriots position on Kayshon Boutte has been hard to read, which is why the trade chatter around the young receiver has not gone away. New England has been sending mixed signals about his future, leaving enough uncertainty for rival teams to keep watching and for the rumor mill to keep moving even without anything official on the table.

New Orleans has emerged as a team to watch in that mix, especially after its receiving depth took a hit with rookie Jordyn Tyson sidelined by a hamstring injury. Whether the Saints actually push for Boutte is still unclear, but the connection makes sense on paper and adds another layer to a situation that remains very much in the speculative stage. Patriots Fans Finally Get To Celebrate A Franchise Icon Again

Rob Gronkowski is headed back to Foxborough for a moment Patriots fans have been waiting for, as the former tight end will be inducted into the New England Patriots Hall of Fame in a public ceremony on Nov. 7 at Patriot Place Plaza. Selected as the 38th inductee, Gronkowski will receive the red jacket in his first year of eligibility after winning the fan vote, a fitting next step for one of the most recognizable players of the franchises modern era.

Over nine seasons in New England, Gronkowski built a rsum that put him among the teams defining stars, piling up 521 catches, 7,861 yards and 79 touchdowns while helping the Patriots win three Super Bowls. The Hall call adds another layer to a legacy already tied to some of the teams biggest moments, and for a fan base that watched him dominate for nearly a decade, the ceremony offers a chance to celebrate it all again in person.
