Mike Vrabel didn’t sugarcoat Jared Wilson’s Week 2 tape.
After a rough outing against the Steelers, the Patriots’ second-year center is suddenly a name to watch as New England heads into Sunday’s matchup with the Jaguars, especially with Mike Onwenu dealing with a broken ankle and likely done for the season.
The offensive line was already one of the biggest stories of the Patriots’ 2026 offseason. New England brought in free agent guard Alijah Vera-Tucker to take over on the left side, then slid Wilson to center after Garrett Bradbury handled that spot in 2025. The move made sense on paper because Wilson played center in college, and it was part of the optimism around a group that hoped to rebound after a rough postseason and Super Bowl.
There have been positives. Will Campbell has looked much better as a pass blocker through two games, which has helped ease Vera-Tucker into the mix. But the line hasn’t been clean across the board, and Onwenu’s injury only raises the pressure on the rest of the unit.
Vrabel made it clear Monday that Wilson is one of the players under the microscope.
“I think Jared, that wasn’t one of Jared's better games yesterday. There were some times where we have to hold up in the middle and pass rush, but I also know that sometimes, when we break those runs and he’s at the second level and getting guys covered up, that he’s at the point of those attacks as well.
So, I think he can protect better. I know he can protect better.
I’ve seen him protect better.
But they also had a lot of really good, nice blocks when we ran the football, broke through there and were able to get to the second level.”
Wilson’s Week 2 grade from PFF was 51.3 overall, and his head coach clearly noticed the difference from the opener. That doesn’t erase the fact that he looked much better in Week 1, though, and the Patriots can point to the quality of the first two opponents as part of the story. They opened against a Super Bowl rematch and then faced a Steelers front led by TJ Watt.
So there’s room for some patience. One bad game doesn’t define a player, and Wilson has already shown he can be a solid starter after holding that role as a rookie last year.
Still, if the struggles carry over against Jacksonville, the conversation changes fast. New England doesn’t need another problem on the offensive line, and with Onwenu out, the margin for error is getting thin.
