New England Patriots rookie edge rusher Gabe Jacas is back on the field, and the early buzz around him has been loud. That’s notable because his arrival has been slowed by a medical situation that has drawn plenty of attention.
A report from The Boston Globe said health experts have raised concerns about a “large osteochondral defect” in Jacas' left knee. Former Chargers head physician Dr.
David Chao of SICScore.com said the structural problem is similar to what veteran pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney has dealt with, and he called a severe cartilage lesion a major threat to long-term joint durability. Chao also said that if NFL teams had known about the defect before the April draft, Jacas' draft grade would have fallen sharply.
In his view, simply getting to a second NFL contract would count as a major success because of the physical risk involved.

For all of that, the on-field reviews have turned positive quickly once Jacas started practicing again. Patriots on CLNS highlighted whether he could help New England’s front seven right away, and beat reporters were even more direct in their assessment: “The promise he's shown over the last couple of days is undeniable.
He’s been fantastic.” At the same time, insiders have stressed that he remains “a work in progress as a rookie and primarily practicing with the second team,” even as his explosiveness and raw traits have stood out in padded work.
That progress has come through a careful return plan under head coach Mike Vrabel. Before Jacas was activated from the active/non-football injury list, Vrabel said the Illinois product was continuing to recover from his offseason knee cleanup procedure. Jacas has also stayed involved mentally in team meetings and has been working with outside linebackers coach Mike Smith as the Patriots try to turn his upside into production.
