Patriots Suddenly Have A Bigger WR Concern Ahead Of Sunday

A.J. Brown's knee issues resurface, leaving his status for the Patriots' upcoming game in question and raising concerns about his fitness for the season.

A.J. Brown’s Week 13 availability is suddenly in question after the Patriots wide receiver missed practice Thursday with a knee issue that had been added to the injury report a day earlier.

NFL Network reported that Brown sat out because the knee problem “flared up,” leaving his status for Sunday uncertain. That’s a notable development for New England, especially with the receiver already working his way back from a season-opening high ankle sprain.

Brown was also on Wednesday’s injury report with an ankle issue. Since coming off injured reserve in Week 6, he hasn’t yet looked fully back to form, posting six catches on 16 targets for 75 yards over the last two weeks.

The knee situation is not entirely new territory for the 29-year-old. Patriots Executive Vice President of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf previously told Yahoo Sports that Brown has a degenerative knee condition.

Wolf said the team reviewed the wear and tear on Brown’s knee before making the deal and that the medical staff approved it. New England acquired Brown in exchange for a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.

Brown spoke Wednesday before practice and acknowledged that he still isn’t at his usual level of explosiveness, but he didn’t lean on that as an excuse.

“I’m trying to put my best foot forward. I know obviously I’m working through something, but it’s no excuses.

I made none in the first week I was out there,” Brown said. “The things I can control, I try to control.

That’s the only thing. I don’t look at anything as positive or negative, if that’s what you’re looking for.

It’s information.”

If Brown can’t go Sunday, the Patriots are thin at receiver on the active roster, with DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism III the only wideouts there. Kyle Dixon, Cameron Dorner, Chandler Brayboy, and Ryan Miller are on the practice squad.

Patriots Fans Are Debating One Huge Vrabel Reunion Long Shot

The Patriots have spent enough time looking for more juice up front that it is no surprise one familiar name has surfaced in the conversation. Jeffery Simmons brings the kind of pass-rush impact New England could use, and the Mike Vrabel link only adds to the intrigue, since the Patriots coach already knows what the defensive tackle can do from their time together in Tennessee.

But this is the sort of reunion idea that lives more in the rumor mill than in the real world. The Titans do not sound interested in moving Simmons after extending him this summer, and any team even trying to pry him loose would have to pay a steep price to get Tennessee to listen. For now, it is a reminder that the Patriots can use help on the defensive line, even if the most obvious target is probably out of reach. [Read more 🡒]

Patriots Face A Real Week 8 Test Despite Their Offensive Surge

The Patriots head into Week 8 with a chance to measure just how real their offensive surge has been, and the matchup with Miami offers a sturdier barometer than they have seen in recent weeks. New Englands passing game has been the engine behind the turnaround, and the broader conversation around this team now has to include how the offense stacks up when the opponent can answer with a defense built to make life difficult on the ground.

Miami brings its own problems for New England to sort through, with a run defense that has held up well and a rushing attack that has kept the Dolphins balanced even with DeVon Achane out. If the Patriots are going to keep climbing, this is the kind of game that forces them to prove they can do more than just move the ball in favorable spots, especially against a division opponent that knows how to turn a tidy script into a tense fourth quarter. Patriots Trade Deadline Priorities Are Starting To Get Interesting

With the NFL trade deadline creeping closer, the Patriots are in the familiar position of trying to improve without a lot of room to maneuver. New England does not have much cap space to work with, but the front office is still looking at ways to add help, and the list of possible targets is broad enough to show where the roster could use a lift. Edge rushers, defensive tackles, linebackers, wide receivers, running backs and offensive linemen are all on the board as the Patriots weigh whether to make a move.

The interesting part is not just that New England is exploring multiple lanes, but that the team appears willing to consider upgrades across both sides of the ball. No official trade has been reported, so this is still a search rather than a deal, but it does suggest the Patriots see a chance to plug holes if the right player becomes available. For a team trying to keep building around its young core, the deadline could end up being less about splash and more about finding the right fit. [Read more 🡒]
