Patriots Suddenly Have A Backfield Question That Could Force Action

TreVeyon Henderson's unexpected health setback forces the Patriots to rethink their strategy as the trade deadline looms.

TreVeyon Henderson’s latest update may have done more than clarify his own status - it could also force the Patriots to rethink how they approach the trade deadline.

New England has been without one of its most explosive offensive pieces since last Thursday, when Henderson was sent home with an illness that hadn’t been publicly explained. On Friday, Henderson laid out just how serious the situation has been, saying he’s been dealing with a medical emergency that sent him to the hospital for several days.

“Recently, I experienced an unexpected and unusual medical emergency involving a series of unexplained neurological symptoms that required hospitalization for several days. During that time, I underwent extensive medical testing and evaluation. While the results of my comprehensive medical testing have come back positive and reassuring, the cause of this remains unknown and unexplainable.

I will continue working closely with specialists and physical therapists to focus on my recovery, as these symptoms affected my strength, coordination, and some of my physical functions. I am committed to doing everything necessary to return to full health.”

Henderson has not practiced with the Patriots since Oct. 29, and the team still hasn’t offered a timetable for when he might be back. Head coach Mike Vrabel was set to address the media Friday afternoon.

That uncertainty lands at a tricky moment for New England, with the NFL’s Nov. 10 trade deadline approaching. A week ago, running back was not near the top of the Patriots’ shopping list.

Edge defender, nose tackle and tight end were all viewed as bigger needs. Now that Henderson’s availability is up in the air, the position suddenly looks a lot more fragile.

The Patriots do have Rhamondre Stevenson, who can handle a three-down workload and remains an important pass protector for quarterback Drake Maye. Corey Kiner has also given them useful snaps in the RB3 role. But Henderson’s speed is a different element, and if he’s sidelined for a stretch, that part of the offense disappears.

There’s also the broader deadline chatter that tends to follow Vrabel because of his Tennessee ties and the constant speculation around Derrick Henry. That noise figures to get louder in the coming days, especially after what happened Thursday night.

Baltimore looked shaky in its game with undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano at quarterback, passing for just 55 yards and falling below .500. Henry, who frequently lined up in wildcat looks, finished with a team-best QB rating of 79.2, while Fagnano posted a 22.7. The Ravens are now reportedly bringing in veteran Jacoby Brissett as a last-ditch effort to salvage their season after Lamar Jackson (thumb) and Tyler Huntley (toe) were placed on injured reserve this week.

Henry’s contract also makes him easy to move. Baltimore has already paid out most of his $14 million salary, and an acquiring team would owe him less than $1 million at the deadline this year. He has no guarantees remaining in 2027.

For the Patriots, the bigger immediate question may be simpler: if Henderson is out for an extended period, running back no longer feels like a luxury concern. It looks like a real need.

Tom Brady Had The Perfect Reaction To Gronk And Edelmans Latest Bit

Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman are back together in a familiar lane, this time using Fox Sports new digital series, The Gronk & Jules Show, to mix football talk with a little bit of personality. The project includes a song called Talkin Football, and the former Patriots teammates are leaning into the kind of easy chemistry that made them such a staple in New England for years.

Tom Brady noticed, too, and he had the sort of lighthearted reaction that fits the whole thing. He reposted the video with a joking comment, giving the series an extra boost from one of the most recognizable names in franchise history, while Gronk and Edelman continue building out a show that will feature conversations with players, coaches and insiders. Patriots Fans Have A Few Week 9 Results To Watch Closely

With the Patriots still trying to sort out their place in the AFC race, Week 9 brings a few scoreboard-watching opportunities that could matter almost as much as what happens in Foxborough. The schedule includes matchups like the Jaguars at the Ravens and the Jets at the Chiefs, and both games carry ripple effects for New England as the playoff picture starts to take shape.

Baltimore is one of the more interesting teams to track because of the way its quarterback situation has developed, while New Yorks trip to Kansas City is another one Patriots fans will have an eye on for reasons beyond simple rivalry. New England has its own business to handle, but these are the kinds of results that can quietly change the math around the AFC standings before the season gets much deeper. [Read more 🡒]

Patriots Suddenly Face A Running Back Decision They Didn't Expect

TreVeyon Hendersons availability has suddenly become a major Patriots storyline after a medical emergency sent the rookie running back to the hospital and left his return date unclear. For a team that had been counting on him as part of its backfield plans, the situation has quickly turned from a football issue into a broader roster concern, with New England now having to think through how it handles the position if the uncertainty lingers.

With the trade deadline approaching, the Patriots are at least being mentioned in the kind of running back speculation that usually surfaces only when a team feels pressed to act. The names being floated around the league are the sort that would reshape a backfield in a hurry, but for now it is still just that, speculation, as New England waits for more clarity on Henderson and weighs whether outside help becomes necessary.
