The Patriots’ opener already went sideways in a hurry, and now they’ve got an injury issue to manage on top of it.
A.J. Brown left the game after hurting his ankle on a short catch attempt from Drake Maye, and the early read on the injury is a high-ankle sprain. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the update, noting that Brown’s X-rays came back negative for a fracture and that he had an MRI scheduled for today to figure out how much time he’ll miss.
“Patriots WR AJ Brown, who left last night's opener because of an injury, is believed to have suffered a high-ankle sprain, per me and @MikeGarafolo,” Rapoport reports. “X-rays were negative for a fracture. Brown has an MRI today to determine how much time he'll miss.”
That’s a frustrating diagnosis for New England, because high-ankle sprains are the kind of injury that can linger and make a receiver’s return a lot more complicated than a standard ankle issue. At the same time, the negative X-rays at least keep this from sounding like a season-ending problem.
Brown’s night ended early after he tried to work his way to the ground to secure the pass, got hurt on the play, and hobbled off without coming back. He was later seen in a walking boot, which made it clear he wasn’t close to being fine, even before the specifics were known.
Before exiting, Brown had caught three of four targets for 26 yards and also drew a defensive pass interference penalty on an underthrow from Maye that set up a touchdown.
The big question now is simply how much time Brown will miss. He’s likely to sit out at least some games, but the latest update points to an injury he should be able to return from rather than one that shuts him down for the year.
