The New England Patriots’ roster picture keeps getting tighter, and now the receiver room is the latest area under pressure.
Mack Hollins and FB Reggie Gilliam were both moved to injured reserve, pushing the total number of Patriots on the reserve list this season to 19. Hollins’ move comes after a calf injury in Week 4, adding another hit to a receiving group that has already been forced to shuffle pieces around.
That shuffle started when A.J. Brown went down in the season opener against Seattle with a high ankle sprain.
The Patriots acquired Brown for a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick, and his expected return window runs from Week 6 to Week 8. In the meantime, Hollins had stepped in as a reliable option.
The 10-year veteran has led New England’s receivers this season with 209 yards on 15 catches. His latest stint on injured reserve is also a reminder that this isn’t unfamiliar territory; last year, Hollins missed time late in the season with an abdomen injury before returning in the AFC Championship Game against Denver.
On Monday, head coach Mike Vrabel didn’t overcomplicate the situation.
“Anybody that can help us. We’ll go explore here shortly.”
That answer came when he was asked about how Brown and Hollins being sidelined affects the receiver group.
At the moment, the active roster receivers are Romeo Doubs, Demario Douglas, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III. Behind them, the practice squad features Chandler Brayboy, Kyle Dixon and Cameron Dorner, all of whom were not elevated for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
If New England does add help, the decision point is simple enough: is this a short-term patch while Brown and Hollins recover, or a longer-term move for the offense?
A temporary fix would likely send Vice President of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf and Vrabel toward other teams’ practice squads or the free-agent market. Odell Beckham Jr. was signed by the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday to their practice squad, which means getting him would require a spot on the 53-man roster. Other veteran names mentioned as possibilities include Gabe Davis and Zay Jones, both of whom are working back from injuries suffered last year.
There are also familiar NFL options like Noah Brown and Brandin Cooks, who are still looking for another opportunity. Tyreek Hill has also teased interest in signing with an NFL team as he works his way back from the knee injury he suffered a year ago.
As of now, there has been no report that the Patriots have interest in any unsigned veteran receiver.
A trade would be a different kind of move altogether, one that would bring in a player expected to stay on the active roster if healthy. On Friday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Arizona Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison Jr. has been included in a finalized trade package with an unnamed team.
The fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft, one selection after Drake Maye, had a modest start to his NFL career after putting up 2,613 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns in three seasons at Ohio State. With Hollins’ IR designation landing the same morning, the timing has naturally sparked questions about whether the Patriots are the unnamed team in the Harrison deal, or whether they’ll try to beat the reported offer already on the table.
A cheaper trade target could come from the Cleveland Browns, who have limited WR Jerry Jeudy’s offensive role, or the Los Angeles Chargers, who could part with players such as WR Quentin Johnston. The Patriots’ AFC East rival Miami Dolphins may also be looking ahead to the 2027 Draft and could be willing to move skill players like Malik Washington or Jalen Torbert.
For now, New England has 52 players on the roster, so another signing or practice-squad elevation could happen before Sunday’s matchup with the Raiders. Vrabel has made it clear the team is at least looking, and the next move will show whether the Patriots are trying to survive this stretch or reshape the receiver room for longer.

Patriots Fans Are Starting To See Efton Chism Very Differently
Efton Chism has gone from an afterthought to a name Patriots fans are starting to track a lot more closely. The second-year slot receiver has shown enough in recent weeks to get noticed, including a memorable catch in Week 4, and his timing makes the interest feel even more relevant with injuries thinning out the receiver room. Around New England, that has naturally brought more attention to what kind of role he might be able to carve out in the offense.
Patriots insider Tom E. Curran has been part of that conversation, weighing Chisms style and how it might fit if the team needs another dependable option inside. Chism has already invited the easy comparisons, too, with some seeing shades of Julian Edelman and noting his friendly relationship with the former Patriots star. The bigger question now is whether what Chism has flashed can keep translating once the workload and the expectations both start to rise. [Read more 🡒]
Former Patriots Super Bowl Champions Death Left A Family Facing Heartbreak
Jordan Deveys death this summer has left a painful void around a family that had already built a life well beyond his NFL days. The former offensive lineman, who spent eight seasons in the league with teams including the Patriots, Chiefs and 49ers, won a Super Bowl in New England before moving into coaching high school football in Idaho. His wife, Linsey, chose their 15th wedding anniversary to publicly share the news, underscoring just how abruptly the familys world changed.
What she described next made the loss even harder to absorb, especially for their children and their 11-year-old son Cash. Linsey said the emotional toll has been overwhelming as the family tries to navigate grief in the open, with the story of Jordan Deveys death now carrying a deeply personal dimension that reaches far beyond football and into the private pain left behind. Drake Maye Faces A Bigger Test As Patriots Hope Momentum Is Real
Drake Maye has already gone through the kind of early-season adjustment every young quarterback eventually faces, with opponents building a better scouting file and forcing him to work through it. After a challenging start, he showed clear progress against the Bills, and now the Patriots are trying to figure out whether that performance was the beginning of something real or just one sharp afternoon in an uneven stretch.
The next chance to answer that comes against a Raiders defense preparing with full respect for what Maye can do. If he keeps building on the signs he showed last week, New England could start turning recent momentum into a genuine winning streak, which is exactly the sort of development this team has been waiting to see from its quarterback.
