The New England Patriots are making strategic moves to bolster their offensive line, adding some much-needed depth with the signing of swing tackle James Hudson III. This one-year deal, reported by NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, brings a versatile asset into the Patriots' fold.
Hudson, 26, has a solid track record in the NFL, having played in 60 games since he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2021. A former standout at both Michigan and Cincinnati, Hudson was picked in the fourth round, 110th overall.
After his rookie stint with the Browns, he moved on to the New York Giants, where he signed a two-year deal as a free agent. However, he was released before the new league year began.
With 19 starts under his belt, Hudson has logged 1,464 snaps on offense and 235 on special teams. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 313 pounds, he’s capable of playing both left and right tackle. His versatility extends beyond the line, having been eligible to play as a fullback and tight end during his time in the AFC North and NFC East.
The Patriots have seen their depth at tackle diminish recently. Former starter Vederian Lowe has moved to the San Francisco 49ers, and Thayer Munford Jr. is currently unsigned.
Meanwhile, Yasir Durant was not tendered as a restricted free agent. With Hudson’s addition, the Patriots aim to solidify their offensive line, providing crucial support behind starters Will Campbell and Morgan Moses.
Hudson's experience and flexibility could prove invaluable as the Patriots look to strengthen their protection schemes this season.
