The New England Patriots have made a significant roster move by releasing veteran running back Antonio Gibson. This decision, announced on Monday, wasn't entirely unexpected. Gibson was previously highlighted as a potential cap casualty for 2026, and this move frees up $3.1 million in cap space for the team.
The official word from the Patriots is that Gibson was released with a failed physical designation. He's been on the mend from a torn ACL that prematurely ended his 2025 season, and it seems the Patriots are now looking to explore other options in their backfield.
Gibson, 27, began his football journey as a wide receiver at Memphis, where he was a standout one-year starter. His potential caught the eye of Washington, who selected him with the No. 66 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He initially inked a four-year rookie contract worth just under $5 million, including a signing bonus of over $1 million.
After his stint with Washington, Gibson joined the Patriots in 2024 on a three-year, $12 million deal. During the 2025 season, he managed to appear in five games, tallying 106 rushing yards on 25 carries, averaging 4.2 yards per carry. He also contributed two receptions for six yards and a touchdown.
As the Patriots move forward, they'll be evaluating their options to bolster the running back position. Meanwhile, Gibson will be looking to recover fully and find a new opportunity to showcase his talents on the field.
