The New England Patriots have made a notable roster move by releasing running back Antonio Gibson, as announced on Monday. Gibson, 27, is currently recovering from a season-ending torn ACL, which he sustained during a Week 5 victory against Buffalo back in October. Before his injury, Gibson was a key player for the Patriots, serving as their lead kick returner and the third running back behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson.
Gibson was approaching the final year of the free-agent contract he inked in 2024. By releasing him, the Patriots free up more than $2 million in cap space, positioning themselves with over $38 million as they head into the 2026 league year.
During his tenure in New England, spanning over two seasons, Gibson made a solid impact. He rushed for 644 yards and scored two touchdowns, maintaining an impressive average of 4.4 yards per carry.
Additionally, he caught 25 passes for 212 yards. On special teams, Gibson was a standout kick returner, averaging 27.2 yards per return and notching a memorable 90-yard touchdown against Miami in Week 2, marking the first victory of the Mike Vrabel era.
Gibson's journey to New England followed four years with the Washington Commanders, where he entered the NFL as a third-round pick from Memphis in 2020. He enjoyed a standout second season with a 1,000-yard rushing performance but faced challenges with fumbling in his later years with Washington.
With Gibson's departure, the Patriots' running back room now features Stevenson, Henderson, Terrell Jennings, and Lan Larison, who will look to step up in the upcoming season.
