New England Patriots rookie tight end Eli Raridon and his wife, Anna, are grieving the loss of their newborn son, Peter James, after a heartbreaking diagnosis changed the course of their pregnancy.
The couple shared the news in a joint Instagram post on Tuesday afternoon, revealing that doctors diagnosed Peter with anencephaly during a routine 20-week anatomy scan. The severe and incurable neural tube defect prevents parts of the brain and skull from developing correctly, and medical professionals told the family their baby would not survive outside the womb.
Even with that painful prognosis, Anna carried Peter to term. He was born on September 11 and passed away shortly after birth.
“Our angel, Peter James Raridon, was born on September 11th,” a post on Anna’s Instagram account reads. “When Eli and I went in for our 20th-week anatomy scan, excited to see our sweet baby boy, our hearts were forever changed.”
“Our little one was diagnosed with anencephaly, a fatal condition in which he would not survive outside the womb. While we are absolutely devastated that we were unable to bring our baby boy home, I am grateful to have loved him deeply, kept him safe, and had been his home for the past nine months before he was called back to Heaven.”
Peter James was the couple’s first child. Eli and Anna were married in May of 2025.
On the field, Raridon has still managed a promising start to his NFL career. The Patriots drafted him in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, and he has played in two games this season.
He caught his first career NFL pass in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, and it went for a two-yard touchdown. In Week 2 against Pittsburgh, he added a 30-yard reception.
A thigh injury kept him out of the Week 3 game.
Raridon is now dealing with that professional grind while also facing an immense personal loss, and he continues to receive support as he and his family move through the grief.
