Patriots Sign Niko Lalos After Impressive Workout Performance

Patriots bolster their special teams by signing versatile athlete Niko Lalos as a converted long snapper, adding depth to their roster.

The New England Patriots have added some depth to their roster by signing Niko Lalos, a versatile player who’s made an intriguing transition from defensive end to long snapper. This move, announced Monday, brings Lalos into the fold alongside Julian Ashby, the Patriots' seventh-round pick from 2025.

Lalos, 28, has had a unique journey through the NFL. Originally joining the league as an undrafted free agent in 2020, he made an impression during his rookie season with the New York Giants. In just six games, he logged 72 snaps on both defense and special teams, showcasing his knack for being in the right place at the right time with six tackles, a fumble recovery, and an interception.

Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 270 pounds, Lalos is a Dartmouth product and a former first-team All-Ivy League selection. His path hasn’t been without its challenges.

After spending 2021 on the practice squad, he was released at the cutdown deadline the following year. However, he found opportunities with the New Orleans Saints over the next few seasons.

Lalos also made a brief but notable appearance in the XFL with the Seattle Sea Dragons, where he racked up 35 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception. His performance there caught the eye of NFL teams, leading to a tryout with the Philadelphia Eagles as a long snapper in 2025.

Now, as he joins the Patriots, Lalos brings a wealth of experience and a unique skill set. His adaptability and determination could make him a valuable asset as the team gears up for the upcoming season. Keep an eye on this intriguing addition as the Patriots continue to build their roster.
