Patriots Shake Up Coaching Staff in Bold New Move

Patriots demonstrate commitment to diversity by following Rooney Rule in Zak Kuhr's promotion to defensive coordinator.

The New England Patriots have made a significant move by promoting Zak Kuhr to the role of defensive coordinator, a decision that follows all the necessary protocols, including the Rooney Rule. This rule, established in 2003, is designed to ensure diversity in NFL leadership by requiring teams to interview at least two minority candidates for coordinator positions.

With Terrell Williams stepping into a new high-ranking role on Mike Vrabel’s staff, the Patriots had a vacancy to fill. Kuhr, who stepped in for much of the 2025 season while Williams was dealing with health issues, now officially takes the reins as the defensive play-caller.

In their search, the Patriots interviewed several candidates, including Cleveland Browns safeties coach Ephraim Banda, who has been gaining attention for his work since joining the Browns in 2023. Banda brings a wealth of experience from his 11 years coaching at the collegiate level, making him a strong contender during the hiring process.

With Kuhr now leading the defense, the Patriots are also making adjustments to their coaching staff. Vinny DePalma is expected to fill Kuhr’s previous position as linebackers coach. As the 2026 NFL season approaches, New England is set with a refreshed coaching lineup, ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
