The Patriots are dipping into the practice squad for some extra help in the secondary ahead of Sunday’s trip to Buffalo.
New England elevated cornerback Kindle Vildor and safety Mike Brown on Saturday, making both veterans available for the Week 4 matchup against the unbeaten Bills. Both players are set to revert after the 2026 AFC East opener.
Vildor, 29, got a look in Foxborough during the preseason and helped himself with an interception before landing on the practice squad after being released as a vested veteran at the 53-man roster deadline. The Georgia Southern product, who checks in at 5-foot-11 and 189 pounds, entered the league as a fifth-round pick of the Bears in 2020, going No. 163 overall.
Since then, Vildor has bounced through stops with the Titans, Eagles, Lions and Buccaneers before signing a one-year deal with the Patriots in March as an unrestricted free agent. Over 80 career games with 27 starts, he has collected 140 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and two interceptions. He has logged 2,105 snaps on defense and 573 on special teams.
Brown, 27, was called up last week against the Jaguars and played a role in the 35-6 loss at EverBank Stadium. He finished with one tackle while working 12 snaps on defense and 19 on special teams.
The Miami of Ohio alum came into the league as an undrafted free agent in 2022, spent time on the practice squads of the Packers, Vikings and Browns, and then made it to Tennessee’s 53-man roster late in his rookie season. He stayed with the Titans until the 2026 league year began, then signed with New England in March after not being tendered as a restricted free agent.
Released in August, he was kept on the practice squad when it was formed. In 36 games with a few starts, Brown has 61 tackles and two passes defensed across 515 defensive snaps and 779 special teams snaps.
League rules allow three standard elevations before a player would need a 53-man contract to suit up. Vildor has two left. Brown has one.
The Patriots, who are 1-2, still have an open spot on the active roster.
On the injury front, defensive tackle Christian Barmore and cornerback Christian Gonzalez were ruled out after both missed three straight practices with shoulder injuries. Corner Channing Canada was downgraded, while fullback Reggie Gilliam, tight end Eli Raridon, offensive tackle Morgan Moses, outside linebacker Dre’Mont Jones, inside linebacker Christian Elliss and safety Craig Woodson are questionable for Sunday.

Patriots May Have Found A Needed Offensive Bright Spot Up Front
The Patriots 1-2 start has been defined by an offense that has struggled to generate much of anything, which makes any steady development up front worth noticing. One of the few encouraging signs came in Week 3 against Jacksonville, where Jared Wilson handled his work well and gave New England a cleaner look along the interior than it has often had through the first month.
Wilson has been working mainly at center this season, and the progress he has shown from earlier games is part of why his latest outing stood out. He did not allow a pressure or commit a penalty, and that was enough to land him on PFFs Team of the Week, a small but meaningful bright spot for a line trying to help stabilize an offense that badly needs it. Bills Let Another AFC East Game Slip Away For One Reason
The Patriots walked out of Buffalo with a 29-26 win in a game that had plenty of the usual AFC East friction, plus a few swings that kept it from feeling settled until the final stretch. New England got touchdowns from Romeo Doubs and Efton Chism III, while Buffalo answered with a Josh Allen strike to Keon Coleman, and the game had the kind of back-and-forth edge that has made these matchups so hard to separate in recent years.
What stood out, though, was how often the Bills were able to lean on James Cook on the ground and still never fully take control of the game. Buffalo also had chances fueled by multiple Drake Maye turnovers, but the Patriots kept finding enough offense and enough answers to leave the division rival still searching for what slipped away in another one-possession AFC East result. Patriots Bills Matchup Just Got More Complicated In The Secondary
The early weeks of the 2026 season have already tested New Englands depth, with A.J. Brown, Mike Onwenu, Christian Barmore and Christian Gonzalez all dealing with injuries. Now the Patriots are preparing for a divisional trip to Buffalo with another familiar layer of uncertainty in the secondary, even as the Bills are navigating some issues of their own on the back end.
Buffalo cornerback Christian Benford is unlikely to play, which adds another wrinkle to a matchup that already looked like it could turn on coverage and communication. For the Patriots, a game that might have been about establishing control in the AFC East now comes with more moving parts in the defensive backfields on both sides, and that could make Sunday feel a lot less predictable than it did a week ago.
