The Patriots’ Boutte chatter has lingered all offseason, and that alone has kept the door open to a move that would reshape both sides of the roster. Kayshon Boutte is heading into the final year of his rookie contract, and the A.J. Brown trade has only intensified the idea that he could be the odd man out in New England’s receiving room.
That uncertainty has also tied the Patriots to pass-rush trade possibilities, with Kayvon Thibodeaux sitting near the center of the conversation. The Giants edge rusher is in a similar spot on a rebuilt defensive line, and the overlap has made him one of the most discussed names in trade speculation.
FanSided’s Austen Bundy took that idea a step further with a proposal that would send Boutte and a 2027 fourth-round pick from the Patriots to the Giants for Thibodeaux. It’s the kind of deal that forces both teams to confront where they are headed, especially with training camp approaching and neither side looking fully settled in those spots.
For New England, the appeal is obvious. Josh McDaniels has shown he can work multiple receivers into an offense, even with a clear No. 1 like Brown, and he has done it before with players such as Randy Moss and Wes Welker. But the Patriots also haven’t said much about wanting to keep Boutte beyond the 2026 season, which makes the idea of flipping him for value look more sensible than letting him leave for nothing in free agency next spring.
The defensive fit is just as easy to see. Thibodeaux is coming off the worst statistical year of his career after appearing in only 10 games, but he’s still only 25 and was a first-round pick in 2022. The ceiling is still there, and his 2023 season offered a reminder of what he can bring: 50 combined tackles, 16 quarterback hits, three forced fumbles and 11.5 sacks.
He would also add experience to a Patriots defensive line that suddenly carries even more weight with rookie Gabe Jacas’s future still unclear. On the other side, the Giants would land a receiver who has been trending up since being drafted in 2023.
Patriots fans may prefer to keep Boutte in place, but the signs around his future are hard to ignore. At the very least, this is the type of trade worth a serious look, and Eliot Wolf may end up doing exactly that.
