The New England Patriots’ rookies are set to report to Gillette Stadium on Tuesday, putting the team one step closer to the start of training camp and the first real look at this year’s first-year class.
That group includes the nine players the Patriots drafted, along with the undrafted free agents who signed after the draft. Every one of them is chasing the same thing this summer: a shot at the 53-man roster.
The full team won’t hit the practice field until Saturday, when fans will get their first chance to watch the entire roster together. That also means the rookie class will finally be on display, including first-round offensive tackle Caleb Lomu.
The 28th overall pick doesn’t have a locked-in position yet, and that could still change as camp unfolds. During spring work, Lomu took reps at left tackle, right tackle and even some guard. He looked the part when he was out there, but without pads, there was only so much that could be learned about where he stands.
Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has been encouraged by how quickly Lomu has picked things up.
"Great attitude. Awesome kid," McDaniels said in June.
"Love his personality. Practices his butt off every day.
A sponge. Again, we’ve done a tremendous job of bringing in a bunch of guys that just want to learn, try to get better, and work hard.
And so Caleb’s at the head of the class in terms of the rookies for us."
For now, Lomu is expected to begin the summer as the top swing tackle, though a strong camp could put him in the mix for a starting job on either side.
Another rookie worth watching is the Illinois edge rusher New England moved three picks to draft. He has not taken part in a practice since being spotted for one rookie minicamp session before disappearing from public view.
Mike Vrabel said the player had undergone a procedure in the offseason, and that has clearly played a role in why he still has not signed his rookie contract. ESPN reported the deal is being held up by a participation clause. If he still hasn’t signed by the time camp gets rolling, the concern will be how far behind he could fall.
The backfield battle also has some intrigue behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson, who are the clear top two running backs. The third spot is still up for grabs, with veterans Terrell Jennings and Lan Larison in the mix, but two rookies may end up deciding it.
Miller, the Patriots’ seventh-round pick from Alabama, is a compact runner who can get downhill with the ball. Pass protection is not his strongest area. Montgomery, an undrafted free agent from UCF, turned heads in OTAs and brings receiving ability out of the backfield that could fit well in McDaniels’ offense.
At wide receiver, Eliot Wolf said after the draft that he believed the Patriots could be competitive in the undrafted free agent market, and the team backed that up by signing four players at the position.
Kyle Dixon of Culver-Stockton, Cameron Dorner of North Texas, Jimmy Kibble of Georgetown and Nick DeGennaro of James Madison all bring different skill sets that could translate if they get a chance in the passing game.
There is precedent for an undrafted receiver making noise in New England, too. Efton Chism III broke through last summer and earned a place on the 53-man roster, and one of these four could follow a similar path if he stands out once the pads come on.

They also used a first-round pick on Caleb Lomu to handle the swing tackle role, then added another layer of competition on Day 3 with Dametrious Crownover, a sixth-round rookie who gives the line room a different kind of look as camp approaches.
Crownovers college tape comes with some obvious rough edges, especially on the penalty front, but the appeal is just as obvious to a team trying to sort out its depth. His size and length give him a chance to stick in a crowded battle for one of the final roster spots, and the Patriots will spend the summer finding out whether the upside is enough to outweigh the mistakes.
