Quintayvious Hutchins didn’t get the usual call on cutdown day, and that’s because the New England Patriots were keeping him around.
The rookie outside linebacker made the 53-man roster, but nobody in the organization sat him down to deliver the news. While 37 of his teammates were being told to return their iPads ahead of Sunday’s NFL roster deadline, Hutchins was left to piece it together on his own.
He did it the modern way: by checking Instagram.
“[An] Instagram post, when they posted the 53-man roster, that’s how I really found out,” he told the media at his new locker this week. “I saw the 53-man roster and was like, ‘Oh damn, I really made it.’”
Hutchins arrived in Foxborough after a five-year college run at Boston College, then entered the league as the 247th overall pick in this year’s draft. With his draft slot and the depth chart in front of him, nothing was handed to him.
He earned the spot the hard way. Hutchins put together a solid training camp, then kept building momentum with more meaningful reps off the edge. In the preseason, he finished with eight tackles, a sack and three special teams takedowns, enough to put himself in position to stick.
Now he’s one of just four outside linebackers on the roster, alongside Dre’Mont Jones, Elijah Ponder and fellow rookie Gabe Jacas.
Even after making the team, Hutchins is treating this like a beginning, not a finish line.
“The job is not done. Continue to prove myself to earn a role on the team and just be dominant every chance I get,” he said. “You have to come in, work, keep your head up, and keep going.”
