A.J. Brown won’t be on the field for the Patriots on Sunday.
Brown, who had been dealing with ankle and knee issues throughout the week, was initially listed as questionable for the Week 8 matchup with the Miami Dolphins. New England then downgraded him to out on Saturday, ending any suspense about his availability for the AFC East game in Miami.
AJ Brown (ankle, knee), TreVeyon Henderson (illness) downgraded to out for Week 8.
The absence adds another layer to a season that has already been interrupted for Brown. He missed several weeks in the 2026 campaign after suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 1, and the team has also had to manage his knee condition, which has limited his practice time in recent seasons. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said the team would see where Brown was at before heading to Miami, but the final injury report made it clear he wasn’t ready.
Brown’s production has been modest when he has been on the field. He has 20 targets from Drake Maye this season, with nine catches for 101 yards and no touchdowns. He was on the field for more than 90 percent of the snaps in Thursday night’s Week 7 game, but his knee apparently didn’t bounce back well enough for him to suit up in Week 8.
Patriots de facto general manager Eliot Wolf has already acknowledged that the team knew Brown had a degenerative knee issue, even as the medical staff signed off on the trade for the receiver.
Now the Patriots have to move forward without him, and that means a bigger role for Demario Douglas, Efton Chism III and Kyle Williams. Mack Hollins and Romeo Doubs are both on injured reserve, so the receiver room is thin and the ball has to go somewhere.
Douglas is the name to watch in the prop market. He’s now the top receiver on the depth chart with Brown, Hollins and Doubs all unavailable, and his usage has already been trending up.
This season, Douglas has 34 targets, 23 receptions, 256 yards and three scores, and he has finished with at least four catches in three games. Two of those outings have come in the last three weeks, which suggests his role is growing even with Brown in the lineup.
That could matter in a big way against a Miami defense that is dead last in the NFL in EPA/Pass this season. Odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.

Drake Maye Is Becoming A Patriots Phenomenon Off The Field
Drake Mayes footprint in New England keeps growing beyond the huddle. The Patriots quarterback drew a big crowd at MB Spirits in Chelsea for a public meet-and-greet, where fans showed up in his jersey and plenty of Patriots gear, eager for a chance to see the rookie face of the franchise up close. The event had the feel of a local football stop and a community gathering rolled into one, another sign of how quickly Maye has become a familiar presence around the region.
Mayes off-field profile is getting attention for reasons that go beyond celebrity appearances. His connection to Athletic Brewing has given him a window into business and entrepreneurship, and he has talked about how that role fits with his broader interests away from football. For a Patriots team still building around its young quarterback, it is one more layer to a story that is starting to extend well past game day. [Read more 🡒]
Patriots Just Sent A Telling Signal Before The Trade Deadline
The Patriots created some breathing room before the NFL trade deadline by restructuring Hunter Henrys contract, a move that gives the front office a little more flexibility as it weighs whether to add help for the stretch run. New England has not been known for chasing splashy midseason deals, but this kind of cap maneuver usually says something about a team at least keeping the door open.
With the deadline set for Nov. 10, the question now is less whether the Patriots are interested in making a move and more what kind of move they would actually consider. Names like Jonathan Taylor and Josh Downs have been floated as possible targets, but the current roster picture and the teams cautious history suggest any addition would likely be more measured than dramatic. Patriots Suddenly Need These Backup Weapons More Than Ever Vs Miami
The Patriots passing game and backfield took another hit heading into Week 8, with A.J. Brown ruled out for the matchup against Miami. Browns absence stretches his run of missed time and leaves New England trying to piece together production without one of its most important offensive pieces, while TreVeyon Henderson is also unavailable for Sunday because of illness.
With Brown and Henderson sidelined, the Patriots are already thin at several spots, joining Mack Hollins and Romeo Doubs on the unavailable list. That opens the door for players such as Corey Kiner, Eli Raridon, and DeMario Douglas to take on bigger roles, and it puts even more pressure on a group that will need to absorb a lot more of the workload against a division opponent.
