The Patriots have spent real money and real draft capital trying to shore up the edge, but the question hanging over the room is still the same: is it actually good enough?
New England has added Harold Landry on a three-year, $43.5 million deal, brought in Dre’Mont Jones for three years and $36.5 million, and used a second-round pick this offseason on Gabe Jacas out of Illinois. That’s a serious investment. It just may not look like a dominant group on paper.
Part of the case for optimism starts inside. With Milton Williams and Christian Barmore anchoring the interior defensive line, the Patriots may not need their edge rushers to carry the whole pass rush. They might only need the outside group to be functional enough to complement what’s happening in the middle.
Jacas is the swing piece. The Patriots traded up to get him, which says plenty about how they viewed his upside.
At Illinois, the 22-year-old piled up 19 sacks over his final two seasons. He also didn’t get a normal runway into camp, opening training camp on the non-football injury list before practicing for the first time on Saturday as a limited participant.
Landry brings a more established track record, at least when he’s right. He had 5.5 sacks in New England’s first seven games last season, then saw his production fall off after a knee injury. If the 30-year-old is ready for the season opener in Seattle on Sept. 9 and can hold up physically, he has a path to double-digit sacks for the third time in his career.
Jones is the other veteran centerpiece, and the Patriots clearly believed enough in him to let K’Lavon Chaisson walk. Chaisson finished the regular season with 7.5 sacks and added three more in the postseason before landing with the Commanders on a one-year, $11 million deal. New England instead went with Jones, who is coming off a career-high seven sacks and has yet to reach double digits in a season.
There’s also Elijah Ponder, the 2025 undrafted free agent who has lined up opposite Jones with the starting defense through seven days of training camp. Ponder had four sacks as a rookie last season, giving the Patriots another younger body in the mix.
Mike Vrabel made it clear where his mind was before camp even opened. “I think we’ve got a lot of guys that (are) going to take advantage of the opportunity,” Mike Vrabel said on July 24, prior to the start of camp. “They’re going to earn reps and continue to improve.”
Still, the concern is easy to see. Jacas is a rookie learning the NFL after missing time because of a contract holdout and recovery from a knee procedure.
Landry opened camp on the physically unable to perform list, and his status remains uncertain. Jones has been productive, but not yet the kind of true game-wrecker who changes an opponent’s protection plan by himself.
That matters for a team chasing a title in 2026. A top pass rush has been a major part of recent championship runs, and the source material points to that plainly: Drake Maye looked like a shell of himself against the Seahawks’ pass rush in Super Bowl LX, and the Eagles hit Patrick Mahomes six times on the way to a 40-22 win the year before.
The Patriots do have options if they decide the room needs another jolt. Jadeveon Clowney remains unsigned after posting 8.5 sacks with the Cowboys last season.
Kayvon Thibodeaux, the Giants’ 2022 fifth-overall pick, has also been mentioned as a possible trade target after rumors he could be available. Thibodeaux had 11.5 sacks in his sophomore season, then combined for nine over the past two years.
For now, though, the edge group looks like a blend of veterans, promise and uncertainty. It has pieces.
It has potential. What it doesn’t have is a true difference-maker, and for a Patriots team coming off a Super Bowl appearance, that’s a pretty high standard to miss.

Patriots Roster Cut Just Put More Pressure On One Position Group
The Patriots created a little more breathing room on the roster by releasing linebacker Otis Reese, who had first arrived via the practice squad last November. The move does not affect the salary cap, but it does open a spot as New England sits at 90 of its 91 available roster places.
